Retailers and other big name websites are up-in-arms over a new Google search tool, they say, does more harm than good. The new Google service provides a search-within-search feature for many popular sites, especially retail sites, which are resulting in angry site owners who would rather help their customers find what they are looking for and leave Google out of the site-search equation.

Search Engine Marketing Shows Strength as Spending Continues on a Growth Track Against Doom and Gloom Economic Background

NEW YORK - (Business Wire) Search engine marketing spending exceeded projections in 2007 and, based on survey responses by marketers and agencies, the search marketing industry will exhibit continued healthy growth, according to preliminary findings of the 2007 State of the Market survey by the Search Engine Marketing Professional Organization (SEMPO), www.sempo.org, released today at the Search Engine Strategies conference. While the numbers appear robust and reflect a desire for marketers to continue to spend on search, the survey cannot estimate the result of a shortage of search inventory (searches) caused by a major economic downturn. However, a critical finding is that search marketing spending is increasing at the expense of print magazine advertising, website development and other marketing functions, as marketers essentially shif

Search Engine Wars : Google & Yahoo

Now that you have figured out what the market is that you are aiming for and which products or services you wish to sell or market, you need to understand the search engines in general. There are essentially 3 search engines in use today. They are Google, Yahoo and MSN. There are other search engines however as their user base is much smaller or either very unique, they are of lesser importance than the 3 large engines. Localised search engines such as the Chinese search engine Bandu would be of critical importance if you are selling in the Chinese market however the Chinese are unique in that the engine is specifically built for Chinese users due to its unique search ability of the Chinese language. Getting listed on Ananzi for a South African specific website would help you in your traffic building arena however in my view mainly for it

The Sun’s sister paper News of the World is also planning to launch a similar service at an undisclosed point in the future (release).

Google Desktop Search Beta

Desktop search -- the ability to index and query the contents of your PC's hard disk quickly and easily -- is one of the hottest topics in computing at the moment: after all, who hasn't bemoaned the failings of Windows' built-in search tool? Now, one of the biggest beasts in the Internet search jungle has turned its attention to your local storage: Google has launched a beta version of its desktop search tool, which is free to download here. We've been using the program avidly since it was released: here are our first impressions.

Operation Google: Microsoft Declares a Search War

Yesterday, Bill Gates announced the launch of Search Server 2008 to rival Google's (GOOG) Search Appliance. The software allows users to search files and documents inside their corporate network. However unlikely the expensive Google Appliance, which is a box with software, Microsoft (MSFT) will offer the service as a free software download. Yes, you heard that right! No hardware, no packaged software. It will be a web offering featuring online administration, reporting and provisioning features.

EU Recommends Slashing Search Data Retention

Wayland writes "The European Union's Article 29 Working Group has completed its PDF report on data protection and search engines. The group recommends that search engines only be allowed to hold onto search data for six months. 'To hang onto data for longer, search engine operators will need to show that such data is "strictly necessary" to offer the service. Google and others have long said that they need to retain data in order to refine search results, prevent click fraud, and launch new services like spell check (which, in Google's case, was built from user search data). In addition, the data that is kept will need to be guarded more closely. The working group concluded that IP addresses could be used to identify individuals; if not by the search engine itself, then by law enforcement or after a subpoena.

Google VisualRank for Image Search

Google researchers are claiming that a newly developed approach to visual search may do for image searching what PageRank did for text search. "The research paper, 'PageRank for Product Image Search,' is focused on a subset of the images that the giant search engine has cataloged because of the tremendous computing costs required to analyze and compare digital images. To do this for all of the images indexed by the search engine would be impractical, the researchers said. Google does not disclose how many images it has cataloged, but it asserts that its Google Image Search is the 'most comprehensive image search on the Web.'"

Google Tries Focusing On Image Search

Google has a pretty reliable algorithm for determining page rank on text searches. All sorts of attempts are made to game the system, by both legitimate and unscrupulous Search Engine Optimization schemes alike, but those strategies always seem to fail in the long run. But put a search query into Google Images, especially with safe-search turned off, and you'll get a bizarre assortment of pictures to look at. That's because image searches generally just comb through the associated text appended to images. It's the reason why if you're an ornithologist looking for pictures of birds with bright blue feet, you might see a different sort of boobies if you search for them. Now Google says it's got a software solution to more closely align Image Search Page Rank with reality.
