Metadata Continues To Get More Sophisticated

Red Hat's new CEO aims Linux at the cloud (News.com)

As a company gets more sophisticated, one can argue the value of the support is less, but as companies get more sophisticated, the importance of the thing we provide goes up. So for instance, if Amazon wants to get something upstream into the (Linux) kernel because they need some functionality for EC2 (the Elastic Compute Cloud Web service), who can get it upstream? We can.

Hackers resort to 'sick' kidnap spam

How bad was 2007 for breaches, vulnerabilities and similar mayhem? On the bright side, it was better than 2008 is forecast to be. With more of every sort of meltdown predicted -- more criminalization of the hacker community, more Web-application attacks, more phishing, more spamming, more zero-day attacks and more virtualization-related threats -- we're happy to tell you that you are likely to look back on 2007 as the peaceful old days.

Google Finance to add more data to fight Yahoo, AOL

Google plans to expand its finance Web site by adding more historical data and company filings as it tries to gain ground on more-popular services from Yahoo and AOL. The company will also seek to improve its 2-year-old finance site by offering real-time stock prices from the New York Stock Exchange on a permanent basis after a four-month pilot started this week, said R.J. Pittman, director of product management. Google's finance pages had 2.07 million U.S. visitors last month, ranking 13th on researcher ComScore's list of top financial sites. The company plans to use its search technology to help users find data more efficiently, rather than adding editorial content to lure more users, Pittman said. Adding features such as up-to-the-minute stock quotes will help Google lure more visitors that may then visit the company's other sites, sai

Why I did it: I returned the iPhone 3G after only 6 days!

I have no excuses – I should have known better than to let my gadget envy get the better of me. But, with all the new way cool features added to the iPhone 3G and the fact that my existing AT&T plan allowed me to upgrade at $199, I decided to join the other crazies in line last Saturday afternoon and spend 2 hours to get my hands on a new iPhone 3G. I’ve spent more than 20 hours since then trying to get it to do what I needed it to do (i.e., synchronize with Outlook, stay charged up for more than a day, not die when I touch a button, etc.) and then I spent another 3 hours yesterday trying to return it. For more about why I now feel like a moron, read on…

NEW YORK More media may be vying for the consumer's attention, but contrary to conventional wisdom, they're watching more TV than ever before, according to Nielsen data released Tuesday (July 8). Consumers are also watching more time-shifted TV and using the Internet more.

To Get Customers to Spend More, Drop the Dollar Signs

Researchers at Cornell University found that restaurant owners who drop the dollar sign from their menus got clients to spend more — $5.55 more per meal on average, to be exact. (Or should that be 5.55?) The researchers noted that just seeing the dollar symbol agitated diners so much that they spent less.

Xbox 360 controller modded for hardcore first-person-shooter gamers

First-person shooter fans generally prefer the controls of a PC, using a mouse to aim and the keyboard to move around. You get more buttons for access to hotkeys and you can fire while looking around more easily. Console controllers are a little more awkward for such purposes and take more getting used to. Some people don't think that has to be the case, however.

Sony's Euro Boss Says Disc Media Will Die

Whether you like it or not, let's face it, disc media is just plain getting old. Further, "the power of the network" continues to rise and downloadable multimedia content continues to become more and more pervasive. Take a quick vitals check on companies like BlockBuster Video and you'll know why the folks at Netflix are running to head this one off at the pass as well. It's not rocket science people (actually it's called photonics, which is easily as complex), the fatter your pipe gets, the more data you can and will pump down it. Another case study of Valve's Steam game delivery, network gaming and community services, shows end user acceptance was spotty at best initially but has recently exploded with not only top title gaming content but new Cloud services as well.

Is Cuil the next Google?

New search engine Cuil (pronounced ‘cool’), which was launched in the US this weekend, claims to be an improved version of market leader Google – able to index more pages, more quickly and more cheaply. What’s more, it claims to go beyond standard technology by analysing search terms and ranking results by content, rather than by popularity – and then displaying the results in a more user-friendly way. Backed by $33m of venture capital funding, this is clearly a start-up with ambitions to beat Google at its own game…

Nel on 'Gunther'...

"It's my second personality. Gunther is a guy who lives in the mountains and doesn't get enough oxygen to the brain and that makes him crazy. It's a nice German name. It's white-line syndrome. When I walk on the cricket field I get all worked up and quite aggressive. In fact, it's best not to wind him up. The more people abuse me the more I get fired up. In one way I enjoy it when people abuse me. If you give it out you're going to take it so I expect I'm getting abuse."

The Napster Of Newspapers

It's no secret that I tend to think folks who worry about plagiarism quite often blow the issue out of proportion. Luckily, over the last few years, we've seen more and more folks start to recognize that plagiarism isn't always so bad. In fact, quite often, the plagiarists do something more interesting with your content, sometimes taking plagiarism to a new level of artform. The more you look at it, there's a pretty fine line between plagiarism and inspiration. Also, in other contexts, "plagiarism" is quite similar to everyday collaboration. Yes, the failure to properly credit the original author is a bit sleazy, but if you can get beyond that issue, plagiarism is an interesting phenomenon to observe.

Get Ready For the Nerdlympics

jfruhlinger writes "In the upcoming Olympics, competitors will take part in the 'modern' pentathlon, designed in 1912 to simulate the skills a cavalry officer would need when trapped behind enemy lines. ITworld.com has developed a new set of competitions — untangling cables! code obfuscation! — that are a bit more relevant to the modern geek." Don't be too smug, though: Naturalist points out a story indicating that "Exercisers learn faster, remember more, think clearer and bounce back more easily from brain injuries such as a stroke."

Mac Bloggers Get Dropped, Get Apps, Get 48 Hours

Rumblings in the land of iPhone dominated Apple-focused blogs this week, as a small but loud number of owners complained about how little 3G their new iPhones have. Networks are looking at chipmakers, chipmakers are looking at networks, everyone's looking at Apple, and Apple, as far as anyone can tell, is looking at its shoes. The company has said nothing officially, though rumor has it they're working on a fix.
