Slovenian retailer Mercator is projecting a slower net revenue growth of 5% in 2009, which it has put down to expected changes in consumer spending and the scaling back of investment activity. The retailer plans to invest some EUR159 million (USD228 million), 40% less than in 2008. Mercator said the sum corresponds to its available finance, meaning the retailer will not incur any further debt.

The heads of two leading retailers in Slovenia, Mercator and TUS Trgovine-owned Engrotus, have said in a recent press interview that they are not yet feeling the impact of the financial and economic crisis but are adapting nonetheless to changed circumstances. Engrotus Managing Director Aleksander Svetelsek said that November and December would be relatively successful because of the festive season. Engrotus expects its sales to drop at the beginning of 2009, but the exact figures will depend on the situation on the financial market, Svetlesek said.
