Why You Should Support Mac OS X and Linux

IconIndie game developer Wolfire Games gives 5 solid reasons why games developers should support Mac OS X and Linux. [via TUAW] "Obviously supporting Mac OS X and Linux means you tap into another platform and expand your potential market base. That much is clear. But surely adding an extra 5% is negligible, right? Wrong. Not all five percents are created equal." For their game Lugaru, they go on to claim "supporting Mac OS X and Linux directly increased sales by around 122%."

Print News Fading, Still Source of Much News

CNet's Dan Farber took a look, not only at the popular news of how print media is dying a slow death, but also what contribution to the news print journalists are still making. According to research quoted, while the physical publications are quickly becoming a thing of the past much of the news that makes its way into circulation via blogs and other means still originates from the hard work of those print journalists. (We discussed a similar perspective on the news a week back.) "While the Internet is growing as the place where people go for news, the revenue simply isn't catching up fast enough. The less obvious part of the Internet overtaking newspapers as the main source for national and international news is that much of the seed content--the original reporting that breaks national and international news and is subsequently refactore

Is Windows 7 Too Much Like Mac OS X?

Is Windows 7 leaning too much towards the Mac side of life? Many Microsoft bloggers are saying that it does, that Windows 7 is too much "form over function", something they accuse Apple of. While superficially they may have a point, the differences between Windows and Mac OS X are still glaringly obvious. Are a few changes to the taskbar enough to make Windows OS X-like? Bloggers like Mary-Jo Foley, Paul Thurrot, and others seem to think so.

New York, December 2008 - “RSS feeds have simplified the Internet today. With a countless number of websites available, it’s time consuming to get website updates without the use of RSS feeds. And if it was not for the development of RSS feed readers, utilizing the benefits of RSS feeds would be impossible for the novice web user” says Mr. Joe Speed of speedrssreader.com

Plethora of New User Space Filesystems For Mac OS X

DaringDan writes "As part of the recent MacFUSE 2.0 release Amit Singh has added support for an insane number of filesystems on the Mac. This video from Google and this blog post pretty much explain everything in detail but to sum-up Singh has written a new filesystem called AncientFS which lets you mount a ton of UNIX file formats starting from the very first version of UNIX. Even more interesting is that they have also taken Linux kernel implementations of filesystems like ufs, sysv-fs, minix-fs and made them work in user-space on the Mac, which means its now possible to read disks from OSes like FreeBSD, Solaris and NeXT on OS X. ext2/ext3 don't seem to be on the list but apparently the source for everything is provided, so hopefully some enterprising soul can apply the same techniques to ext2.

Vista and XP Leave Windows 7 to Deal with Mac OS X and Linux

Neither Service Pack 1 for Windows Vista, nor Service Pack 3 for Windows XP, both made available in 2008, have been able to turn Windows around from its downward trajectory on the operating system market. Even with the latest service packs, Vista and XP have failed to stop the growth of Mac OS X and Linux, both operating systems making inroads into Microsoft's territory. Vista and XP have taken Window's overall usage share down to 88.68% at the end of December 2008, leaving Windows 7 to deal with OS X and Linux.

Reading RSS Feeds with a...

(Prudent Press Agency) RSS or Really Simple Syndication or Rich Site Summary is the latest information management tool that is gradually earning popularity among web users and website owners. With RSS technology, it is possible to get the latest postings from your favorite websites. But clicking on the RSS or XML button in a homepage is not enough to give you the service you need. An RSS feed or code displayed in the pop-up screen if not on the main page is composed of symbols and words that would only make sense to advanced RSS users and computer programmers and software enthusiasts. Another software tool called an RSS aggregator or reader is needed.
