PHP Optimised for Windows Server 2008

Stony Stevenson writes "It used to be that popular PHP applications would run more poorly on Windows Server than on a Linux or Unix servers, for which PHP had been optimised. Specialist in the PHP language Zend Technologies now says that's no longer the case. The Zend Core commercially supported form of PHP has been certified by Microsoft as ready to run 'with performance and stability' on Windows Server 2008, said Andi Gutmans, co-founder and CTO of Zend. Previously, PHP 'didn't run as well as it should on Windows,' said Gutmans, despite the fact that 75% to 80% of PHP users were developing on Windows workstations."

iGoogle Launches Developer Sandbox

gurubaba writes "Google has announced the launch of iGoogle Developer Sandbox, which will allow developers to build and test applications. The Sandbox provides support for building social applications using the OpenSocial API. 'The iGoogle OpenSocial container will allow developers to build full page applications, just like the ones on Facebook, using the Canvas View. The applications built using the developer Sandbox can display profile information, post activity updates, send messages and gadget invites and add friends. The developers will also be able to monetize the applications through ads.'"

Writing Facebook Applications Using Java EE

Facebook is a popular social networking platform where people connect with family, friends, and like-minded individuals and engage in a variety of possible online activities. A large variety of these activities are made possible through so-called Facebook applications. These applications make use of the Facebook web services and APIs to integrate with the Facebook site, access the Facebook user's social information, and extend Facebook's social platform.

Nastech Pharmaceutical Company Inc. Completes Key RNAi Patent Filings

Nastech Pharmaceutical Company Inc. (Nasdaq: NSTK) announced today that it has completed filing 83 patent applications (79 international applications and 4 U.S. applications) directed toward 144 different genes with siRNA's designed and modified using Nastech's proprietary RNAi technologies. These gene targets are disease-validated against cancer, inflammatory disease, and metabolic disorders. Overall, these patent applications are directed toward tens of thousands of targets.

Scali demonstrates that the choice of MPI is three times more important than the selection of compilers

Marlborough, MA, - April 01, 2008 - Scali, the leader in higher performance computing software, today announced new benchmark results provided by Scali using the SPEC MPI2007 benchmark suite on the newly released Scali MPI Connect version 5.6.1. As of today's release, Scali cements its leadership and has the highest SPECmpiM_base2007 score for all systems ranging from 32 to 128 cores. Further, as a courtesy to the industry, Scali has submitted results using different compilers, enabling studies of which cluster components truly provide differential performance benefits. For a 32-node cluster system using 128 cores, the results show the compiler difference to be a modest 6 percent. However, on similarly equipped systems, these new results show that Scali MPI Connect extracts 18 percent more performance than HP-MPI(1).

Manipulate process priority with nice

Modern operating systems are multi-user and multi-tasking, which means that multiple users and multiple tasks can be using the computer at any given time. Typically you'll have one person using a desktop system running any number of applications or many users using many applications on a server.

Building an IT Infrastructure Around Mars

bfwebster writes "Space.com has an article talking about the efforts to observe the arrival of the Phoenix lander on Mars this coming May using current Mars orbiters. This community will likely be intrigued to see the ways in which NASA is using existing landers and orbiters to prepare for, and then monitor, that landing. This includes using the landers Spirit and Opportunity to simulate transmissions from Phoenix as a testing procedure in advance of the actual landing; using the Odyssey orbiter as a high-speed data transmission link from Phoenix to Earth during the landing; and using the Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter and Mars Express orbiter as backup data stores for Phoenix data transmissions during the descent. How long until we get a terabyte solid-state dataserver (running IPv6, natch) in orbit around Mars?"

Apple releases iPhone SDK, announces upcoming update

During a media event held at its Cupertino headquarters, Apple released the long awaited iPhones Software Development Kit (SDK) and the associated iTunes "App Store" and iPhone Developer Program. The SDK will allow third party software developers to create applications for the iPhone and then distribute them on the iTunes Apps Stores. Any members of the iPhone Developer Program can add applications to the store for free; the program costs $99 (USD) to join. Developers will be able to set the price of the applications or release them for free. All applications will have to be approved by Apple before being allowed on the store. Some of the disallowed categories are"porn", excessive bandwidth users and anything malicious or illegal. VoIP applications would be allowed over Wi-Fi only.

Acegi security for JSF applications

Acegi security is a natural choice for many enterprise applications built using the Spring framework. JSF (JavaServer Faces) is a Java-based Web application framework that facilitates rapid application development by assembling reusable UI components. As you will learn in this article, it is not hard to secure your JSF applications with Acegi. In fact, you can address most details of authentication and authorization in a Spring application context file.

Build a Google Talk Client Using Oracle ADF Faces Rich Client and the Active Data Service

As Oracle OpenWorld 2007 made very clear, the integration of Web 2.0 concepts and trends into enterprise applications is a major trend in application development. Oracle Fusion Applications offer a good example of how combining very appealing, visually rich user interfaces with popular internet trends such as social bookmarking and instant messaging (IM) lead to attractive and productive applications. Communication integrated into the application’s user interface is an important element in the collaboration that this new style of application promotes. E-mail, Voice over IP, and Short Message Service are among the communication channels you might consider, but IM (chat) could well be the most powerful one.

Google Patents Detecting, Tracking, Targeting Kids

theodp writes "A newly-issued Google patent for Rendering Advertisements With Documents Having One or More Topics Using User Topic Interest describes how to detect the presence of children by 'using evidence of sophistication determined using user actions' and tracking their behavior using the Google Toolbar and other methods to deliver targeted ads. Which is interesting, since the Google Terms of Service supposedly prohibit the use of Services by anyone 'not of legal age.' The inventor is Google Principal Scientist Krishna Bharat, who is a co-inventor of another pending Google patent for inferring searchers' ethnicity, reading level, age, sex and income (and storing it all)." Ok I'll be the first to admit that this is greek to me. Someone smart figure this out and post a comment translating patentese into english.

Interop: Palo Alto Networks' Firewall Identifies App Traffic On Content, Not Ports

You've programmed your firewall to block the ports that some unwanted app is using and that app turns up on your net again. Net-enabled applications don't tie themselves down to one port the way the Web (HTTP, port 80) and other apps do. After some firewall shuts their ports down, they find another port. Using traffic profiles instead of ports to identify more than 600 applications, not only did Palo Alto Networks' series win InformationWeek's Best of Interop in the security category, it took the grand prize as well. In the video below, Palo Alto's Lee Klarich walks me through some of the firewall's innovations.

My favorite tools and utilities

A few weeks ago my blogging colleague Ed Bott posted his top 10 list of favorite Windows applications. This was an excellent list and it contained several applications that are firm favorites of mine, specifically SnagIt, Keyfinder and Process Explorer. These applications make my daily work a lot easier. Ed then followed this list up with a second list, this time drawn up based on applications suggested by his readers.Â
