UNIX Time Format Demystified: related news

Make the Move from UNIX* to Linux*: Now is the Time

Instead of pouring more money into expensive, proprietary UNIX servers, you could move to the much less costly—but extremely powerful—Intel* and AMD* processor-based servers supported by Linux. By linking x86 processors together through powerful virtualization software, you can actually build a system that is more powerful than UNIX at a lower cost. If you’re still running UNIX, it’s time to take a look at what Linux can deliver to your organization.

Dynameters portable transit-time ultrasonic flowmeter and handheld transit-time ultrasonic flowmeter available from Dynameters International

is designed for long- or short-term flow measurement surveys on full-pipe liquid systems and is also ideal for verifying calibration of permanently mounted flow meters of all kinds. The Dynameters handheld transit-time ultrasonic flowmeter is one of the powerful flowmeters available for liquid measurement. The utilization of proprietary ultrasonic signal processing, transit-time measurement and signal quality tracking technologies in Dynameters handheld transit-time ultrasonic flowmeter allows the flowmeter to measure liquid flow rate from outside of a pipe reliably and accurately.

Cosmic time warp revealed in slow-motion supernovae

Once upon a time, time was different. Supernova explosions in the early universe appear to age more slowly than today's supernovae, as if time itself was running slower back then, according to a recent series of astronomical observations. This cosmic time warp is exactly what should be produced by the expansion of the universe, confirming conventional big bang theory.

Anatomy of Real-Time Linux Architectures

"This article explores some of the Linux architectures that support real-time characteristics and discusses what it really means to be a real-time architecture. Several solutions endow Linux with real-time capabilities, and in this article I examine the thin-kernel (or micro-kernel) approach, the nano-kernel approach, and the resource-kernel approach. Finally, I describe the real-time capabilities in the standard 2.6 kernel and show you how to enable and use them.

Make the Move from UNIX to Linux: Now is the Time

Overview UNIX generally requires expensive proprietary software and hardware as well as budget-draining annual maintenance costs. These expenses are a key factor in recent wide-spread migrations to other platforms, specifically Linux. This whitepaper examines how companies are creating business advantage by making the move from UNIX to Linux.

Beatles and iTunes At Last?

rjshirts writes "Ars Technica is reporting that the Beatles and Apple have signed a reported $400 million dollar deal to bring the entire Beatles Catalog to iTunes. From the article: 'As of today there is no time frame as to when the catalog will appear online, but it seems to just be a matter of time. McCartney himself even said in November that the catalog would be making its way onto the the store some time in 2008. While we have heard this sort of thing time and time again, this might just be the real deal. Prepare yourself — Beatlemania is coming to iTunes.'"

Unix Group Takes UK Standards Body To Court Over OOXML

superglaze writes "Halfway through the two-month window of opportunity during which OOXML's ISO standardization can be derailed by a formal objection from a national standards body, the UK Unix Users Group is trying to force the British Standards Institution to do just that. According to the Unix Users Group, the BSI used a flawed decision-making process when they chose to approve OOXML in the ISO vote. 'The UKUUG is also folding in many other complaints about Office Open XML (OOXML), such as unresolved patent issues and a lack of completion in the specification's documentation, and is calling for the High Court of Justice to force a judicial review of the BSI's decision.' This is not the first time a country's ISO vote has been challenged."

Patents: real-time collaboration, lookup tables, more

The US Patent and Trademark Office today published three patents that it approved for Apple, relating to real-time collaboration, time-based user interface object interaction, and element number tables. The first patent, Method and Apparatus for Supporting Real-Time Collaboration, demonstrates synchronicity on a single application between multiple remote users. The patent illustrates users operating a local software application over the internet or a network, with the goal of sharing a common workflow between users.

Sony Left Holding The Format War Winner Bag

Toshiba backed the HD DVD format against Sony's rival Blu-ray high-definition disc method, and Toshiba lost. One wonders whether Sony might ask themselves from time to time if it might have been better to have lost. More or less, no one wants a Blu-ray player.

Podcasts explore real-time Linux, Java

The IBM Linux Technology Center has posted a two-part podcast interviewing IBM Distinguished Engineer Paul McKenney about the Real-Time Linux Project. Topics include hard- and soft real-time Linux, programming languages, hardware platforms, new real-time applications, and future additions to the mainline.

eBay Italy Eliminates Store Inventory Format

eBay Italy is eliminating Store inventory format while keeping the eBay Stores ("Negozi eBay") concept. The site is introducing a new duration for Buy It Now (BIN) listings - 30 days in addition to 3, 5, 7 and 10 days - for all sellers. Store owners may list in the new BIN format, and all BIN listings will appear in core eBay search, unlike listings in the Store inventory format that is being eliminated.

Efficient XML Interchange (EXI) Format 1.0

The Efficient XML Interchange Working Group has published a Working Draft of Efficient XML Interchange (EXI) Format 1.0. This document is the specification of the Efficient XML Interchange (EXI) format. EXI is a very compact representation for the Extensible Markup Language (XML) Information Set that is intended to simultaneously optimize performance and the utilization of computational resources. The EXI format uses a hybrid approach drawn from the information and formal language theories, plus practical techniques verified by measurements, for entropy encoding XML information. Using a relatively simple algorithm, which is amenable to fast and compact implementation, and a small set of data types, it reliably produces efficient encodings of XML event streams.

Deluded SCO CEO on witness stand: "Linux is a copy of UNIX" (ars technica)

McBride said that SCO holds the rights to UNIX and that "many Linux contributors were originally UNIX developers." Specifically, he said, "We have evidence System V is in Linux,"—directly contradicting what Sontag had previously testified. Due to the witness exclusion rule invoked by both parties, McBride was not present during Sontag's testimony and wasn't aware of what had been said. McBride's claims also directly contradict internal SCO memos from 2002, which reveal that the company's own extensive source code audits had uncovered no UNIX code in Linux.

Sony PS3 Home: Delayed for a Second Time

If at first you don’t succeed, try again. If that second effort doesn’t work, then take more time and go for trial number three. There’s usually little wrong with taking the time to get a project right assuming you have the resources and luxury of time. On the other hand, as the famous quotation

Concurrent Puts Out Update of RedHawk Real-Time Linux

While Linux is well known for its stability and ruggedness, for certain embedded and real-time applications, even Linux needs a little extra help (as do various Unixes, for that matter) in being suitable for running the most sensitive and pressing workloads. That's why Concurrent Computer and Wind River Systems, which have substantial experience in real-time operating systems, exist. To keep current with the advances in Linux features, Concurrent recently updated its RedHawk real-time Linux platform.
