A bug in my Simple Comments script got me thinking this week about the use of pragmas in Perl; specific instructions that we can embed in Perl code, depending on our needs and preferences, that allow our scripts to be compiled and behave differently than they would otherwise. Though we use pragmas in most of our Perl scripts (one in particular is recommended for almost all scripts, especially those of beginners), we rarely think about them. How exactly do pragmas work? When we add the simple:

Just like Perl , Java has been around for a while. However, Perl is a scripting language and Java is a true object-oriented language ... which perhaps explains why Java and Perl programmers don't usually hang out at the same bars.

Plenty of people have said that Perl is dead. (Some of them post on this site.) Rather than looking in the rear-view mirror of book sales (and I keep arguing with our research group that we need to normalize that data to account for the huge sell-in spike for a frontlist title and the inevitable batch of returns three months later) or a naive search for “X programming”, Tim Bunce gathered job posting statistics and other information particular to the Perl community to demonstrate that the duct tape of the Internet is still alive and well.

Perl is the Swiss Army chainsaw of programming languages: powerful and adaptable. It was first developed by Larry Wall, a linguist working as a systems administrator for NASA in the late 1980s, as a way to make report processing easier. Since then, it has moved into a several other areas: automating system administration, acting as glue between different computer systems, web programming, bioinformatics, data munging, and even application development.

By the spring of 2000, Swedish government officials were pretty nervous. The delivery date on a major computer application was already a year late, causing a highly publicized delay in the start of the nation's new money-market pension system. With the legal deadline approaching for the system's launch, the government gave PPM - the agency in charge - six months to develop a fallback application, just in case the main commercial program hit another snag. PPM hired an independent consultant, and GlobeCom AB, to design the back-up application for Sweden's Premium Pension System, with the simple directive that they provide something usable very quickly. Given the time crunch, the team built the application (known as Pluto) with Perl, using an Oracle database.

With more than 95,000 applications for title transfer per year, Siemens' U.K. government customer, the Registers Of Scotland Executive Agency (ROS), is a busy organization. By their very nature, databases are often indispensable; but rarely do they carry the tradition, symbolism, and historical importance equal to the Registers of Scotland. Originally founded seven centuries ago - not long after King John signed the Magna Carta - these registers hold millions of records and guarantee the property rights of individuals throughout the country. Bringing this database into the digital age posed serious problems for Siemens Business Services, until the development team discovered Perl.

An anonymous reader writes "Engineers' focus and attention to details, along with their perceived lack of social skills, make them ideal targets to be recruited as terrorists, according to EETimes. Planning skills make engineers good 'field operatives' was written up by Raphael Perl, who heads the Action against Terrorism Unit of Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe. He offers that 'Engineers ideally make excellent strategic planners, and they make excellent field operatives. They think differently from how other people think.' That may sound like a stereotype, but Perl claims that 'because of those traits, terrorist groups actively recruit engineers.' He says that Al-Qaeda has widely acknowledged that a significant number of the group's top leadership had engineering backgrounds.

TERMIUMplus is a trilingual application that allows translators and terminologists to search a collection of 1.5 million entries in English, French and Spanish. The system is freely available to any employee of the Canadian Federal government as well as by subscription to individuals and organizations outside. Because the server experiences significant amounts of traffic during the middle of the day efficient request handling is of paramount concern. It is not uncommon to be servicing over 100 concurrent requests at 2pm. Not only does the system perform very well but it is also very stable. mod_perl plays an integral role in the success of this system.
