Fight Night Round 4 announced for 2009 (Fight Night Round 4)

One of the first real showcases for the 360 and its graphical capabilities was Fight Night Round 3. Instead of going by a health bar, you could just look at your fighter and see how sweaty/bruised/bleeding he was during the fight. It even made the Burger King look beautiful. But to those who thought the series might be done in three just because EA gave the boot to the game’s developer EA Chicago, well, don’t call it a comeback, but there is a Round 4.

Disgaea Gets Another Port [Nintendo DS]

Another day, another Disgaea it seems. NIS America is readying another port of its PlayStation 2 strategy RPG Disgaea: Hour of Darkness, this time on the Nintendo DS.

Perl Pragma Primer

A bug in my Simple Comments script got me thinking this week about the use of pragmas in Perl; specific instructions that we can embed in Perl code, depending on our needs and preferences, that allow our scripts to be compiled and behave differently than they would otherwise. Though we use pragmas in most of our Perl scripts (one in particular is recommended for almost all scripts, especially those of beginners), we rarely think about them. How exactly do pragmas work? When we add the simple:

10 Perl modules all Java developers should know

Just like Perl , Java has been around for a while. However, Perl is a scripting language and Java is a true object-oriented language ... which perhaps explains why Java and Perl programmers don't usually hang out at the same bars.

Beginner's Introduction to Perl 5.10, Part 2

A Beginner's Introduction to Perl 5.10 talked about the core elements of Perl: variables (scalars, arrays, and hashes), math operators and some basic flow control (the

Perl Leaving Rodale to Join S&S

Rodale publisher Liz Perl is joining S&S as senior v-p, marketing for adult publishing. She will begin May 19, reporting to Michael Selleck, executive v-p of sales and marketing. Perl will step in to the job Selleck held before he was promoted into his current position.

Perl 5/6 and Parrot Myths Debunked

Plenty of people have said that Perl is dead. (Some of them post on this site.) Rather than looking in the rear-view mirror of book sales (and I keep arguing with our research group that we need to normalize that data to account for the huge sell-in spike for a frontlist title and the inevitable batch of returns three months later) or a naive search for “X programming”, Tim Bunce gathered job posting statistics and other information particular to the Perl community to demonstrate that the duct tape of the Internet is still alive and well.

Perl delivers speech on terrorism

Terrorism will become a tool manipulated by a greater number of groups and for a greater variety of purposes in the future,” said yesterday Raphael Perl, from the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe. Perl, spoke yesterday on the role of ýnternational organizations in combating terrorism in a conference organized by the Turkish military in Ankara.

Perl Runs Sweden's Pension System

By the spring of 2000, Swedish government officials were pretty nervous. The delivery date on a major computer application was already a year late, causing a highly publicized delay in the start of the nation's new money-market pension system. With the legal deadline approaching for the system's launch, the government gave PPM - the agency in charge - six months to develop a fallback application, just in case the main commercial program hit another snag. PPM hired an independent consultant, and GlobeCom AB, to design the back-up application for Sweden's Premium Pension System, with the simple directive that they provide something usable very quickly. Given the time crunch, the team built the application (known as Pluto) with Perl, using an Oracle database.

TiVo Gets Another Patent Win; DISH Network To Take It To Supreme Court

TiVo (NSDQ: TIVO) has won another round… The U.S. Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit in Washington, D.C has denied EchoStar (NSDQ: DISH) a rehearing of its loss to TiVo from back in January. A lower court had ruled that EchoStar must pay TiVo $73 million for infringing on its “Time Warp” patent. The Appeals Court reaffirmed the full lower court ruling, including the damages. But it’s not over just yet. DISH Network, the EchoStar spin-off, says it will appeal to the Supreme Court. Of course, there’s no guarantee that the top court will hear the case, but it’s their last option. In the meantime, it claims that it has already figured out and delivered a non-infringing workaround, so its customers won’t experience an interruption.

APOY Round Two

Still life is the theme of our 'Arranged by…' round, and it is very much open to your interpretation. Perhaps you have a box of old relics in your attic you want to position in your kitchen when the afternoon light is just right. It could be that you found an appealing natural formation of rocks at the beach. Maybe your son's bedroom, littered and strewn like the aftermath of a seafood platter, screams photographic potential. Or maybe you like that metaphor so much you want to shoot the seafood platter itself. In this round we are looking for an object or collection of objects from which you can experiment in composition, lighting, colour arrangements, texture reproduction and more. There are many forms of still life, and many more ways in which to interpret a scene, but be careful when composing that your image does not stray into the ge

PlayCafe Raising First Round For Online Game Show

LA-based PlayCafe, an online video game show, has raised an unspecified first round from First Round Capital, reports NTV, which notes that the raise is still in progress. The site offers a live Q&A game show, that allows users to participate for prizes and cash. So far, participation is still small, with the nightly game averaging 250-300 players. The company plans to eventually run the game around the clock—currently it runs an episode each night during the week.

In episode 56 of Astronomy Cast, I noted that hoping that a black hole will lead to another dimension is sort of like a frog thinking that a blender will take him to another realm.

Mike Tyson Steps Into the Ring for Round 4

Electronic Arts recently announced that EA Canada is currently developing Fight Night Round 4 under the EA Sports brand. The excellent Fight Night Round 3 was developed by the now disbanded EA Chicago, so EA Canada has some pretty big shoes to fill. Luckily, it seems like the new developers are up to the tall task with the recent announcement that "Iron" Mike Tyson will be in the game (now if they could only get Jack Johnson in the game and cut down on all the damn in-game advertisement).

Attributor Raises $12 Million Third Round To Help Protect Copyright

Attributor, a start-up that helps content owners profit from plagiarism of their work, has raised a $12 million third round from Jafco Ventures and Turner Broadcasting, along with return backers Amicus Capital, Draper Richards, First Round Capital and Selby Venture Partners, says VentureBeat. It has previously raised $10 million, bringing its total to $22 million. The Redwood City, CA-based company fingerprints content for customers like Reuters (NSDQ: RTRSY) and the AP, allowing it to be tracked as it’s repurposed around the web. Upon identifying the perps, owners can then take various actions, such as requesting a link, proposing a revenue split or take more aggressive action, like sending out a takedown notice. As we’ve mentioned, the proposition comes off as a ‘holy grail’ for content owners.

All square going into the final round

Kenya's Elite One-Day League was thrown wide open as both teams that lost last week won in the second round of the competition. That leaves all sides level on four points with all of them in with a chance of the title in next weekend's final round of matches.
