Optimizing something other than keywords: related news

optimizing keywords other something than
It's interesting to me how often people focus on keywords and the tag. But writing pages for SEO is more effective if you focus on other tags and writing good content. So I was very pleased when I found this article on Design Without Frontiers - Optimise your and meta tags. What's really nice about this article is it describes what to do to optimize these tags with some examples from a hypothetical search.

aputerguy writes "My Fedora 8 Linux server crashed sometime between 18:59:40 EST (GMT -5:00) and 19:00:00 EST (GMT -5:00) on Dec 31, 2008 which remarkably corresponds to within at most 20 seconds of the New Year in GMT. I have been running this same hardware non-stop for more than six years and other than the occasional reboot for kernel (or distro) upgrades, it has not crashed more than 1 or 2 times in 2237 days of cumulative uptime. Nothing other than background processes were running at the time of the crash. Could this be a coincidence or was there some 2008/2009 rollover issue going on here? Has anyone (other than Zune 30GB owners) noticed similar year-end issues with their computers or electronic devices?"

Roland Piquepaille writes "According to researchers at the University of California at San Diego, visual areas of our brain respond more to valuable objects than other ones. In other words, our brain has stronger reactions when we see a diamond ring than we look at junk. Similarly, our brain vision areas are more excited by a Ferrari than, say, a Tata new Nano car. In this holiday season, I'm sure you've received gifts that excited your brain — and others that you already want to resell on an auction site."

Some of us burn up more of the Internet's bandwidth than others. Take Google. The search giant consumes far more of the Internet's traffic lanes than it actually pays for. That's the conclusion of a provocative study released by tech industry analyst Scott Cleland. In fact, the analysis shows Google is by far the largest user of Internet bandwidth, and that Google's bandwidth use is orders of magnitude greater than its payments for its cost.

A lively debate is taking place in our Two Takes section on the legality of online file sharing. On the one hand, copyright holders argue that intellectual property must be strictly protected. On the other, critics say the effort does society more harm than good by creating a generation of young criminals. Should illegal online file sharing of music, movies, books, and other media be prosecuted? Post your thoughts.

New Delhi: This is for the incessant googlers and researchers in all of us. We are all part of chain of curiosity. What is on Google's list of the most searched people and items? It is a long list but Katrina Kaif is right on top. Bye Bye Aishwarya and Madhuri Dixit! Katrina is the new Indian fantasy. The God of online searches, Google, says Katrina is head and shoulders above every other Indian on the web. And in her case, love works across borders, in Pakistan she's twice as hot.

There is more to the ckBot than meets the eye. This aggregation of 15 blocks moves with the grace of a toddler and looks like something designed by a 2-year-old. But when ckBot’s creator, Mark Yim, gives it a swift kick, sending the pieces flying apart, the robot does something remarkable. The scattered modules flip over and wriggle toward each other, guided by cameras and internal sensors. When the blocks make contact, they magnetically latch together and—in an action eerily reminiscent of the liquid metal T-1000 cyborg in Terminator 2—reassemble themselves in their original form.

The VAR Guy dons a hairshirt for getting five things wrong in 2008 on open source, but other than his optimism on Mandriva, there's little in his predictions to criticize. Indeed, it may simply be too soon to call the game one way or the other on his other predictions related to Novell Suse, Google Android, Ubuntu Server Edition, and Sun/MySQL.

"Let's be frank, the impressive number of folks jumping ship to new OSs and other companies claiming increased smartphone market share are clear indicators that plenty of customers want something other that Windows Mobile, and the latest words out of Microsoft's largest mobile partner certainly reconfirm our suspicions. A unnamed HTC executive speaking to Smarthouse admitted that the sales of its flagship Android device are, in fact, hurting sales for HTC's Windows Mobile offerings. Now, we'll probably have to wait a bit longer for more comprehensive numbers -- if they're ever actually released -- but we have a feeling that people want something different, and Google's first dip into the mobile OS space is certainly a viable alternative."

FRANKFURT (Agencies): Germany's second biggest bank, Commerzbank, says it will take control of Dresdner Bank sooner than planned and for less than expected so as to integrate it more quickly against a backdrop of volatile financial markets. The acquisition of Dresdner from insurance giant Allianz will be made at a sharply lower price, and finalised in January, rather than in the second half of the year, Commerzbank said in a statement late Thursday. "Commerzbank will achieve 100 percent of Dresdner Bank a lot earlier than originally assumed," it said. Commerzbank already owns 60 percent of Dresdner and it will pay some three billion euros (3.9 billion dollars) in cash plus Commerzbank shares and the online brokerage comdirect for the remainder.

This year has been a phenomenal year for Indian telecom. We have added more than 100 million customers during the year. As the sector remains buoyant adding more than 10 million customers every month, I have every reason to believe that telecom will remain one of the rare bright spots as the economy grapples with slowdown in 2009. Five years back, I would perhaps have been more than a little worried at the prospect of a slowdown as serious as the current one. Today however, mobile telephony having graduated from it s elitist status to be one among the essentials, a la roti, kapda and makaan for a large section of the population, I am not unduly disturbed. Perceived return on investment on a mobile connection continues to be higher vis- -vis other forms of investment/expenditure.

Three-quarters of online youth in North America have a mobile phone today, including more than 90% of 18-year-olds. These young people rely heavily on their cell phones for a wide variety of communications and content services — in fact, they report spending more time texting than on any activity other than face-to-face contact with their friends. Almost one-quarter of these young mobile users access the Internet on their phones, a segment that has already proven highly valuable to operators, handset makers, content providers, and marketers. Product strategy professionals in all parts of the mobile ecosystem must work together to drastically improve the mobile Net experience, which will result in increased revenues across the board.

An anonymous reader writes "ZDNet's Adrian Kingsley-Hughes tested the latest Win7 build against XP and Vista and came to a surprising conclusion: Win7 performs better than the other 2 OSs in the vast majority of the 23 tasks tested. Even installation. 'Rather than publish a series of benchmark results for the three operating systems (something which Microsoft frowns upon for beta builds, not to mention the fact that the final numbers only really matter for the release candidate and RTM builds), I've decided to put Windows 7, Vista and XP head-to-head in a series of real-world tests...'" This review shows only a 1-2-3 ranking for each test, so there's no sense of the quantitative level of improvement.

When online payment services like PayPal were first launched over a decade ago, the sudden and disturbing ease with which regular people could electronically transfer money between each other online was nothing less than miraculous. Not only was it faster and easier than withdrawing cash from an ATM or even doing a wire transfer, an average Joe could accept credit card payments from other users without having to invest in any sort of equipment or processing system. That phenomenon is happening all over again in the form of cash transfers via text message. If you live in a country where there's a participating carrier and banking institution that supports it, all you have to do is send an SMS to your friend in order for money to virtually change hands.
