Stony Stevenson writes "It used to be that popular PHP applications would run more poorly on Windows Server than on a Linux or Unix servers, for which PHP had been optimised. Specialist in the PHP language Zend Technologies now says that's no longer the case. The Zend Core commercially supported form of PHP has been certified by Microsoft as ready to run 'with performance and stability' on Windows Server 2008, said Andi Gutmans, co-founder and CTO of Zend. Previously, PHP 'didn't run as well as it should on Windows,' said Gutmans, despite the fact that 75% to 80% of PHP users were developing on Windows workstations."

McAfee is reporting a large uptick in the number of Trojan adware installs via bogus MP3 files on file sharing networks. Masquerading as audio files with real-sounding names, the Trojans install adware on users' PCs. Once someone tries to open the files, they are asked to sign an end-user agreement and then the program installs two Trojan files - NetNucleus and Mirar. Once installed, the infected machines start serving up popup ads. Over the last 24 hours, McAfee reports that nearly one third of all McAfee clients reporting results back to the company have detected these files.

Various encryption methods can be applied to individual fields rather than entire files. Innovative Routines International Inc. (IRI), makers of the CoSort data manipulation package has announced that CoSort V9 can encrypt and protect files with private personal information down to the field level. Other tools protect sensitive data by encrypting entire files, databases, disks, or laptops—which is often slower, and renders everything else inaccessible. Instead, CoSort can apply different protections to each field as needed: anonymization, encryption, de-identification, filtering, obfuscation, or pseudonymization—rendering data theft futile. Also unique is the fact that CoSort users can employ (and audit) these protections as they manipulate and report from many large files.

A U.S. District Judge denied a request by the Recording Industry of America (RIAA) for a summary judgment against an Arizona couple accused of illegally sharing music files through the Kazaa peer-to-peer file sharing service. RIAA asserted the presence of the music files in a shared folder constitutes copyright infringement. The defendant, Jeffery Howell, claims he did not place the music in the shared folder but that it was automatically put there by the system. The judge denied the motion on the grounds that it was unclear whether Howell had put the files in a shared folder and said that, even if he had, making files available does not meet the requirements for copyright infringement or distribution. MedaiaSentry, an agent hired by the RIAA, was able to see the files in the shared folder, but unless someone does actually download the co

During a media event held at its Cupertino headquarters, Apple released the long awaited iPhones Software Development Kit (SDK) and the associated iTunes "App Store" and iPhone Developer Program. The SDK will allow third party software developers to create applications for the iPhone and then distribute them on the iTunes Apps Stores. Any members of the iPhone Developer Program can add applications to the store for free; the program costs $99 (USD) to join. Developers will be able to set the price of the applications or release them for free. All applications will have to be approved by Apple before being allowed on the store. Some of the disallowed categories are"porn", excessive bandwidth users and anything malicious or illegal. VoIP applications would be allowed over Wi-Fi only.
