phobos13013 writes "Here's an article just in time for 4th of July fireworks shows! The ACS's Chemical and Engineering News provides a fairly technical discussion about the hazardous chemicals in modern fireworks displays. Perchlorate is currently the oxidizer of choice in fireworks, but it is also known to be a thyroid blocker. Since perchlorates are water-soluble anions, they dissolve into groundwater quickly. A study performed last summer over a lake in Ada, Oklahoma showed that less than a day after a fireworks display, the lake's chlorate levels jumped by a factor of 1,000. It took weeks for the levels to drop back down to their baseline. On the other hand, heavy metals are used to produce the pretty colors typically associated with the best fireworks.

Fireworks photography is not as difficult as you may think. A little planning and know how will help you capture great fireworks photographs. With the 4th of July celebration being this Friday for those in the U.S., this is a great time to work on your fireworks photography. To help you capture the "perfect" fireworks photograph I have two lessons on fireworks photography. The first is a basic lesson and the second goes into more advanced issues to help you fine-tune your images. I also have a link to a great article from Sue Chastain, our Graphics Software Guide, on how to remove ugly backgrounds from your images when necissary.

A complete newb writes "London's Telegraph newspaper reports that some of the fireworks which appeared over Beijing during the television broadcast of the Olympic Opening Ceremony were actually computer generated. But — hold on — it's not necessarily as bad as you think. The faked fireworks were actually set-off at the stadium, but because of potential dangers in filming the display live from a helicopter, viewers at home were shown a pre-recorded, computer-generated shot." To me, the reasoning behind the faked display is no consolation or excuse — it seems hard to swallow that NBC was unaware of this televised deception. I'm glad that it was good-naturedly "revealed" this weekend (according to that Telegraph article), but it's disheartening that such a large crowd can watch (in person, and around the world) such a display and have

TORONTO, July 15 /CNW/ - Luxell Technologies Inc. (TSX:LUX) is pleased to report it has now been issued an additional U.S. patent (No. 7372436). The patent specifically relates to reducing ambient light reflections off of the display face and provides OLED displays with greater sunlight legibility. The resulting end-display will benefit from an increased readability and from reduced production costs as the use of polarizing filters is no longer required. Luxell considers this to be an important patent addition to its intellectual property ("IP") portfolio and a significant representation of the efforts and resources invested by Luxell in previous years to develop new display technology and processes. Jean-Louis Larmor, Luxell's CEO, said "this patent re-enforces the value of the global IP that has been developed by Luxell in Flat Panel te

A TURKISH company which has created an eco-friendly lubricant for vehicles using nanotechnology continues to impress the motor trade and is selling well in the UK. NNT Nanotechnology AS in Turkey, the parent company of Nanoboron Ltd in the UK, produces Borpower, a unique oil additive which brings a range of advantages to engines. Borpower is added to motor oil to make engines cleaner, more efficient and longer lasting, and has a unique and patented nanotechnology formula. It reduces friction in an engine and corrosion on working metal surfaces. Managing director Ismail Cikci told London Turkish Gazette that up to 15 per cent less petrol is used as a result of the lubricant being added to petrol, diesel or LPG. MechEMark writes with this excerpt from a hope-inspiring article at the IEEE Spectrum, which says "Researchers from Microsoft say they've built a prototype of a display screen using a technology that essentially mimics the optics in a telescope but at the scale of individual display pixels. The result is a display that is faster and more energy efficient than a liquid crystal display, or LCD, according to research reported yesterday in Nature Photonics ... The design greatly increases the amount of backlight that reaches the screen. The researchers were able to get about 36 percent of the backlight out of a pixel, more than three times as much light as an LCD can deliver. But Microsoft senior research engineer Michael Sinclair says that through design improvements, he expects that number to go up — theoretically, as high as 75 percent.

I need to update some information related to a post that I made last week about multiple displays with Linux. In a nutshell, I have a laptop and a port replicator with a display connected to it. That gives rise to three basic "states" for display - using the laptop display only (not connected to the port replicator); using the external display only (connected to the port replicator with the laptop lid shut); using both displays simultaneously.

Barence writes "Microsoft is working on a web-based operating system called Midori, as it looks to life beyond Windows. Midori is expected to be a cloud-computing service, and so not as dependent on hardware as current generations of Windows. It's also expected to run with a virtualization layer between the hardware and the OS, and is expected to be a commercial offshoot of the Singularity research project which Microsoft has been working on since 2003." The LA Times is running a piece on cooperation among cable companies and telcos. No, not cablecos cooperating with telcos; rather, both industries working on industry-wide initiatives aimed at getting a leg up on the other. AT&T, Verizon, and Qwest have been working on a site, Moveroo.com, aimed at easing the pain of people moving within the US — by making it easier for them to hook up with the incumbent telco at their destination, for instance. Odd that there is no mention of which cable services might be available where they are heading. The cablecos are cooperating on a more ambitious initiative to standardize targeted advertising nationwide, using data gathered from the set-top boxes used by Time Warner, Cox, Comcast, Cablevision, Charter, and Bright House Networks.

The PlayStation 3 version of BioShock is shaping up to be quite a beast: a grand total of four developers are working on the port. Aside from 2K Boston and 2K Australia (the two teams who originally produced and released the game on the Xbox 360 and PC last summer) 2K Marin and an external studio, Digital Extremes have also signed on. It's worth nothing the need for four studios (that's got to set a record, maybe two with it being a port) could be due to the fact each of them are believed to be working on other projects at the moment.

MojoKid writes "As a 22-inch, HD flat-panel display, AOC's new 2230Fm LCD has nothing necessarily earth-shattering about its design. But what got our attention was the marketing tag for the device: 'No PC Required.' It turns out that, in addition to being a traditional flat-screen LCD with a native resolution of 1680 x 1050 (HDCP ready), the 2230Fm also includes a built-in media player, with what AOC calls its HD3 technology. The 2230Fm supports MPEG-1, 2, and 4 video formats. Supported audio formats include MP3, WMA, WAV, OGG, FLA, and M4A. Supported photo formats include JPG, TIFF, PNG, BMP, and GIF images with resolutions up to 8000 x 8000 pixels. The display also has a low 2ms response time and high 20,000:1 dynamic contrast ratio."
