Why ISPs Stand Against Child Porn Is Actually Not a Stand Against Child Porn: related news

actually against against child child isps not porn porn stand stand why
TechDirt has an insightful article on the recent push for ISPs to turn off Usenet access under the guise of fighting child pornography. Unfortunately, the "stand against child porn" isn't actually a stand at all, it seems more like ignoring the issue while trying to snag some headlines and good will. "Taking a stand against child porn wouldn't be overly aggressively blocking access to internet destinations that may or may not have porn (and there's no review over the list to make sure that they're actually objectionable). Taking a stand against child porn would be hunting down those responsible for the child porn and making sure that they're dealt with appropriately... Also, this sets an awful precedent in that the ISPs can point out that it's ok for them to block "objectionable" content where they get to define what's objectionable witho

It's not that the major porn studios were alright with you torrenting porn vids online, it's that they didn't yet organize themselves to form an entity to do something about it. No longer. Think of the new organization PAK as the MPAA of the porn world, planning to target websites that host or track torrents of porn. It seems like they're first going after the "tube" sites, like porntube and youporn, but we'll see how successful they are going after torrent sites. After all, the MPAA and RIAA have been doing it for years and you're still downloading. [Daily Tech via T3]

I have Webroot Antivirus with Anti-Spyware, and it is currently running a sweep. The problem is that it seems to be scanning porn-related files that I can’t find on my PC. I don’t LOOK at porn, and don’t know where they could have come from. They appear to be saved in a folder called C:\docs & settings\user\!\PORN NAMES. I can not find the “!” folder. What’s more, something is making my computer REALLY slow. The sweep has also detected a virus titled Troj/Agent-HEG. The sweep has found this virus in the past, and when I remove it, it comes back about two weeks later. Please help me to (a) get the porn off my computer (if it’s even there) and (b) remove the virus for good. I’m hoping these two actions will speed my PC up again! Thanks for all your help! Molly

An anonymous reader writes "It seems that ISPs have gathered together with 45 attorney generals and the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children (NCMEC) to form an agreement to crush child pornography. What does that mean? Probably the same as it meant for RoadRunner, Sprint, AT&T and Verizon customers — the end of the newsgroups." Here's the back-patting press-release from the various parties who signed on (the National Cable & Telecommunications Association, the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children, and the National Association of Attorneys General), though the actual text of the agreement does not seem to have been made public.

The German Federal Patent Court ruled today that Qualcomm’s GSM patent case against Nokia (NYSE: NOK) is invalid, Reuters reports. This is the third court to conclude that the American chipmaker’s patent claims against Nokia are “without merit,” said the Finnish handset maker. The United Kingdom High Court, and the U.S. International Trade Commission have also ruled that Qualcomm’s GSM patent claims against Nokia to be invalid. The two will meet again in German court in October, when a second Qualcomm (NSDQ: QCOM) patent case will be heard. The news comes on the same day that Qualcomm and Nokia are to meet in a Deleware Court over its ongoing patent dispute.

An anti-piracy organization called The PAK Group was formed last year for the purpose of gathering information about online copyright violations in order to pursue lawsuits for theft. The organization started out primarily pursuing illegal p2p sharing in a manner similar to RIAA. However they have now re-focused their efforts to target websites that have large amounts of copyrighted material on them. Specifically, they are looking to crack down on porn websites that are using copyrighted smut, sites like all of the tubes that you have modeled themselves after YouTube but which are all porn content. To crack down on these sites The PAK Group uses software to spider websites and find specific content that has been stolen; they are documenting the information in an organized plan to pursue litigation attacking the porn thieves.

I Don't Believe in Imaginary Property writes "The war against the alt.* hierarchy of Usenet continues as NY Attorney General Andrew Cuomo has convinced two more ISPs to drop access to part of Usenet. They've also set up the website NY Stop Child Porn, and convinced California to join them in the fight. In some sense, this is rather like bulldozing the slums to fight crime; sure, it might get rid of a lot of undesirables, but it also affects many innocent people, and everyone will now start migrating elsewhere in droves. The article notes, 'Cuomo's new web site signifies that he's clearly not done yet. It includes contact information for 20 ISPs that presumably operate in New York, and text of a letter to send to them to urge that they sign on to the campaign.
