girlfriend hardy heron testing usability
toomin writes "Reviews of the latest Ubuntu version, 8.04 Hardy Heron, are everywhere, but most of them are undertaken by geeks familiar with Linux. This guy sits his girlfriend down at a brand-new Ubuntu installation and asks her to perform some basic tasks. Some of them are surprisingly easy, others frustrate and annoy. There are lots of little usability tweaks he stumbles upon just by seeing the desktop experience from the point of view of the mainstream user."

The roboTest F robotic testing system is designed for flexible specimens, such as films, textiles and fleece materials, but even metals andwires can be tested using the corresponding grips and tooling. The system allows testing to be carried out overnight and at weekends therebyreducing the need for shift working. In addition it is possible to carry out testing using unsupervised or relatively unskilled operators.Robotic testing systems simplify the processes required for quality management systems such as ISO 9001 because the testing sequence is pre-programmed, and not subject to human error. Results and long term statistics are also available in real-time helping to minimise communication inefficiencies between different production processes.

The latest addition to the hanging boat display at the National Maritime Museum Cornwall is Flook, the first ever Heron dinghy designed in 1950 by Jack Holt. She was hung from the museum’s ceiling earlier this month. The Heron was a popular beginners' boat in the 1950s, and served a great number of people taking to the water after the Second World War. Boats like the Heron used the plywoods and glues developed for aircraft in the war to great effect, creating light, stiff hulls at a low price. The Heron remains popular today, with international ownership estimated by the museum to be in excess of 10,000.
