The Future Has a Kill Switch: related news

The Future Has a Kill Switch

palegray.net writes "Bruce Schneier brings us his perspective on a future filled with kill switches; from OnStar-equipped automobiles and city buses that can be remotely disabled by police to Microsoft's patent-pending ideas regarding so-called Digital Manners Policies. In Schneier's view, these capabilities aren't exactly high points of our potential future. From the article: 'Once we go down this path — giving one device authority over other devices — the security problems start piling up. Who has the authority to limit functionality of my devices, and how do they get that authority? What prevents them from abusing that power? Do I get the ability to override their limitations? In what circumstances, and how? Can they override my override?' We recently discussed the Pentagon's interest in kill switches for airplanes.

Actiblizzion wants to take on iTunes

Now that the merger between Activision and Vivendi has finally been made official, it looks as though the massive company has some suitably massive plans for the future. Bobby Kotick, who has moved from CEO of Activision to CEO of the entire, merged company, has said that the publisher has plans to create a digital music platform that could compete directly with iTunes.

John Glenn Speaks Out Against Future Moon Base

NASA's first man to orbit the Earth, John Glenn has said a plan to set up a Moon base to facilitate the manned exploration of interplanetary space is a very bad idea. Under the current US government direction, NASA hopes to (eventually) establish the manned outpost for future launches to Mars and beyond, thus avoiding the huge gravity well of the Earth. But Glenn has cited the plan as "questionable," pointing out that to pack the huge amount of equipment on board the future Ares V rocket will be "enormously expensive." So what's the alternative? Build a vehicle in Earth orbit and accelerate it to the Red Planet…

iPhone 'kill switch' may protect GPS data?

The alleged kill switch for iPhone software is not meant to apply universally, a new source claims. Yesterday, writer Jonathan Zdziarski called attention to the iPhone 2.0 firmware, whose Core Location code contains a URL titled "https://iphone-services.apple.com/clbl/unauthorizedApps." Zdziarski and others have thus argued that Apple may have a means of remotely disabling any app it wants to, whether for selfish reasons or legitimate user protection.

Compact Disc Turns 26, Has a Bright Future

javipas writes "The Compact Disc was created 26 years ago, but apparently it is as healthy as 15 years ago, when computing versions of this format (CD-ROM, CD-R, CD-RW) made the market explode. Nowadays CD has been replaced in some segments, but not on the music industry, that continues to support it massively. The shy return of vinyl and the absence of real competitors make CD's future very bright, so it seems this birthday will not be by any means the last one we celebrate. Happy birthday!"

Wii moves past Xbox 360 in the USA says NDP

The North American market has been the stronghold of Xbox 360. It was out far before the competition and as a native company many found Microsoft's new video game console to be a trustworthy product. Xbox 360 has been the most sold console in the USA since the launch, but Nintendo has ended that era according to NDP Research. After only 20 months on the market it has sold 10.9 million Nintendo Wii consoles throughout the USA. This is just thousands more than the number of Xbox 360 consoles sold in the USA, which has been on the market for 32 months. I think we can conclude that Nintendo was right not to get involved in the tech war between Microsoft and Sony.

60 Million Apps Sold at iTunes Store, There is a Kill Switch, Says Steve Jobs

It's been a month since the iTunes App Store went live, and in an interview with the Wall St Journal, Steve Jobs has put the apps downloads figure at over 60 million. With the mix of free and paid apps, that brought Apple around $30 million. That's obviously encouraged Steve: he's enthusiastic that maybe "it will be a $1 billion marketplace at some point in time" adding that he's "never seen anything like this in my career for software." And in a slightly unusual candid comment, for Steve anyway, he's admitted that the apps won't be making Apple much profit—instead future sales hopes are pinned on the applications tempting people to buy more iPhones and iPod touches.
