Sun Releases JavaFX: related news

Sun Frees Rich Internet Applications from Browsers, Releases JavaFX 1.0

"The Internet marketplace has evolved within and well beyond the traditional Web browser, fueled by an explosion of Java-powered smart phones and consumer electronic devices from RIM's Blackberry to Amazon's Kindle," said Jonathan Schwartz, CEO & President of Sun, as JavaFX 1.0 was unveiled today. "Sun's newest JavaFX platform unifies Java technology across billions of such devices," he added.

Sun Releases JavaFX

ink writes "Sun released JavaFX 1.0 today, in a bid to take on Adobe's Flash and Microsoft's Silverlight technologies. It is Sun's first Java release to include standardized, cross-platform audio and video playback code (in the form of On2 licensed codecs). The lack of a Linux or Solaris release is a notable absence. The development kit currently consists of the base run-time, a NetBeans/Eclipse plug-in and a set of artifact exporters for Adobe CS 3&4." An anonymous reader adds a link to several tutorials accompanying the new release.

Sun Bets Big on 'Open-Source Storage' Market

Building on 25 years of open system innovation and leadership, Sun announced its first open storage product line - 'Sun Storage 7000 Unified Storage Systems' radically simplifying the way enterprises manage their storage with breakthrough cost savings, speed and scale. "This new innovative product line is part of Sun's Open Storage business - the business that grew more than 100% this past quarter," informed Jagannath A.L, GM-Marketing, Sun Microsystems India. With more than 7.7 lakh developers from India being part of Sun Developer Network, the vendor expects to see tremendous open source community growth from India in near future. "Sun is the only vendor open sourcing storage software, with a choice of operating systems, middleware, and devices on extremely scalable, modular hardware to meet industry needs.

Sun Brews Up Rich JavaFX

Sun Microsystems' new JavaFX is the company's answer to Ajax, Silverlight, Flex and various other platforms developers can use to bring rich Internet applications to Web surfers. JavaFX is designed to bring high-fidelity audio and video to Web apps used both inside and beyond the browser, but rival platforms have already been hard at work for some time courting developers.

JavaFX 1.0 Released

As promised by the JavaFX website, v1.0 has shipped today. The website is currently just a link page to help you get your hands on the first release, but I believe it will switch to a site with lots of JavaFX content sometime soon. If you're a little unsure what JavaFX is, it's worth having a read of the official release statement or having a look at some of the JavaFX videos.

Sun's Mickos Is OK With Monty's MySQL 5.1 Rant

narramissic writes "Back on November 29, MySQL developer Michael Widenius trashed Sun's decision to give MySQL 5.1 a 'generally available' designation in a now-infamous blog post. Widenius warned users to be 'very cautious about MySQL 5.1' because 'there are still many known and unknown fatal bugs in the new features that are still not addressed.' And now we get Sun's response. In an interview Monday, Marten Mickos, senior VP of Sun's database group, said, 'I learned over many years about the benefits and the painfulness of absolute transparency in open source. A little bit of debate never hurts. This is part of being an open-source company. ... People are free to blog about what they want.' Doubtless, this will do nothing to end the debate over whether Widenius will follow fellow MySQL co-founder David Axmark's lead and leave Sun.

Is Linux community watching a setting Sun?

The news was all bad for Santa Clara, Calif.-based Sun Microsystems Inc. recently: a $1.68 billion quarterly loss, plummeting stock prices, up to 6,000 layoffs, and the abrupt departure of Sun's Mr. Open Source: Executive Vice President Rich Green. As if to ensure it killed the corpse, Sun divided Green's open source division into three new groups: applications, cloud computing and computer systems. Sun's Solaris and OpenSolaris operating systems were folded into the computer systems group.

Sun thin clients will be implemented in the computer labs of Dubai's Star International School (SIS), setting a new trend away from the traditional Windows-based systems. Located in the United Arab Emirates (UAE), SIS is affiliated with ETA-Star Education Management Systems, which is part of UAE-based ETA-Star Holdings, a group with diverse interests in a number of sectors including transport and construction. "We're going with Sun Microsystems thin clients, VMware and Windows XP," said SIS's IT manager John Nash. "We plan to increase the number of thin clients so that we have one per class and then our laptops become the bank of computers for cross-curricula work." The system is expected to go live in early January.

This proof of concept exercise demonstrated the feasibility of implementing BoIB using Sun x64 servers, Sun HPC Software, Linux Edition and Mellanox ConnectX technology. Booting over InfiniBand as an alternative to traditional Ethernet can save time, effort, and cost for HPC cluster installations with many nodes. With official support from major InfiniBand vendors and the open source community in general, implementation is becoming easier, making BoIB an attractive deployment option for HPC cluster installations.
