Simple Mod Turns Diodes Into Photon Counters: related news

Simple Mod Turns Diodes Into Photon Counters

KentuckyFC writes "The standard way to detect single photons is to use an avalanche photodiode in which a single photon can trigger an avalanche of current. These devices have an important drawback, however. They cannot distinguish the arrival of a single photon from the simultaneous arrival of two or more. But a team of physicists in the UK has found a simple mod that turns avalanche photodiodes into photon counters. They say that in the first instants after the avalanche forms, its current is proportional to the number of photons that have struck. All you have to do is measure it at this early stage. That's like turning a Fiat 500 into a Ferrari. Photon counting is one of the enabling technologies behind optical quantum computing. A number of schemes are known in which it is necessary to count the arrival of 0, 1 or 2 photons at specifi

Rabbi Cherlow Opposes Inquiry into Wiretaps

(IsraelNN.com) Rabbi Yuval Cherlo of Petach Tikva Yeshiva came out Sunday against the establishment of a committee of inquiry into the matter of the wiretaps against Minister Chaim Ramon. "If indeed illegal wiretaps were made against Minister Ramon during the police investigation into his matter, this must be looked into," he wrote. He added, however, that "The last people who have the right to discuss this are Israel's government [ministers]."

UK Guy Who Hacked Into US Military Computers Overplays His Hand; Loses Extradition Appeal

From the very beginning it had seemed like the US was overhyping the fact that they had tracked down UK-based Gary McKinnon, as the guy who had hacked into various military computer systems. They claimed he had caused millions of dollars of damages, and even called him "the world's biggest hacker." Of course, the details suggest he was more like a big idiot. He got high, decided that the US was hiding secrets on aliens, and hacked into a military computer system to try to find the details -- and then (according to his own explanation) hit the wrong button and thought "oh, bloody hell." So, he clearly did something wrong: he broke into US military computer systems. He clearly deserves to be punished for it, but he's definitely overplayed his hand as well in response.

Review: BeatMaker turns iPhone into a mini-sequencer

There was a time when some people would say that any application running on a cell phone that has a 37-page instruction manual undoubtedly suffers from too many features, a terrible user interface, or both. That was perhaps before the iPhone changed the game. The phone's capable hardware, in conjunction with its multi-touch input and arguably the most capable SDK ever seen on a mobile device, make it an outstanding platform for robust applications. Join us as we take a look into one of the more most applications currently available on the platform: BeatMaker.

'Rewired' brain turns engineer into successful artist

London (PTI): A cerebral haemorrhage turned out to be a blessing in disguise for a British engineer, whose brain was "rewired" to turn him into an artist after the stroke. Ken Walters, resident of Ormskirk, Lancashire, suffered multiple spine fractures and massive internal injuries when he was crushed against a wall by a fork lift truck when a driver lost control. Two life-threatening heart attacks further deepened his gloom.

How a Quake 3 Mod Team Turned Into a Successful Studio

Paul Williams writes "Develop Magazine has an interesting profile up looking at UK studio Splash Damage, charting its humble beginnings as a Quake 3 mod team through to its status as one of Britain's leading studios — it's currently developing a new game for Bethesda. Most interesting is the assertion by studio founder Paul Wedgwood that UK studios should shake off their low-rent reputation and start modeling their businesses on the likes of Valve, id, and the other envied American independents: 'We'd been to the US and seen companies like Ritual, Gearbox and id, and to us it seemed like the game development industry was seen as better in the US. People sat in cool chairs in cool offices surrounded by action figures — it was nothing like the UK's approach, which was more like a workhouse.

Double Case Mod: Xbox 360 and HDTV Mashed Up

It's not often that a case mod involves modding two cases into one, but it's not often you get to see an Xbox 360 stuffed inside an LCD HDTV. PvP LostKnight has done just that to save space, creating what's perhaps the world's first Xbox console console. Not only does it work but it looks really nice, something I'd put in my living room without having to make excuses to my parents when they come to visit. And it's fully functional. [PSPMod]

Russian Mod Makes iPhone's Rear-Side Apple Logo Glow

Saddened by the fact that the Apple logo on the rear-shell of the iPhone is just a dead, un-illuminated entity, a bunch of Russian modders have taken a dremel and soldering iron to one—or is it a replacement back shell? Either way, they brought the sexy (glow) back. Apparently "the battery doesn’t suffer a lot, you can adjust the glow level in Settings menu." Hmmm. Are they hacking into the screen back-lighting circuit? If you're not convinced by the photo: check out the video, it looks pretty real. Updated: A reader has sent us some shots of the mod really in action.

Molding life into art, she brings art to life

For artist Faye Foster, it's hard to put thoughts, feelings and wonderment about the mysteries of life into words. That's why she turns to sculpture to visually capture the human emotions everyone experiences.
