More news on dark matter this week: By analyzing light from dwarf galaxies that orbit the Milky Way, scientists believe they have discovered the minimum mass for galaxies in the universe – 10 million times the mass of the sun. This mass could be the smallest known “building block” of the mysterious, invisible substance called dark matter. Stars that form within these building blocks clump together and turn into galaxies. Scientists know very little about the microscopic properties of dark matter, even though it accounts for approximately five-sixths of all matter in the universe. “By knowing this minimum galaxy mass, we can better understand how dark matter behaves, which is essential to one day learning how our universe and life as we know it came to be,” said Louis Strigari, lead author of this study from the University of Cal

Samsung is working with software developers to increase the performance of Solid State Drives for computers using the Sun's ZFS file system, which the next version of OSX Server, aka Snow Leopard, can take advantage of. The way traditional HDDs handle data transfers is different than how SSDs do, and it's Samsung's goal to make sure future operating systems are optimized for SSDs as well as HDDs. The performance upgrades could mean overall operational increases for OSX-equipped Macs that use SSDs. Currently the MacBook Air is the only Mac that ships with the option, but if Apple decides to make SSDs available on all MacBooks then this development would make the SSD option more desirable than it is now. Microsoft is also starting talks with Microsoft to work the same enhancements into the next version of Windows.

Apple is crowding out other orders for flash memory at Samsung through orders connected to the iPhone, according to reports from some of Samsung's smaller customers. The American company has allegedly ordered 50 million of Samsung's eight gigabit (one gigabyte) chips that are primarily intended for the iPhone 3G and is putting enough pressure on Samsung's supply that the Korean firm is informing smaller firms that their own orders are being reduced to keep Apple in healthy supply.

As researchers look at smaller and smaller objects, it gets hard to measure quantities directly. To get around this, they typically measure a related quantity. One simple way to measure mass is to use a beam attached to a solid fixed substrate. When something is resting on the the beam, it will deflect and vibrate. The deflection will be related to the mass of the object resting on it, its distance from the fixed end, and the stiffness of the beam itself. Addition mass will change the frequency at which the beam vibrates as well, and the change in frequency will be directly related to the proportional change in mass.
