Clement Lefebvre and the Linux Mint community proudly announced last night, on the official Linux Mint Blog, the final release of Linux Mint 6 (dubbed Felicia), a popular Linux distribution based on the Ubuntu operating system. Linux Mint 6 is a new and important step in the evolution of the Linux Mint OS, it is based on Intrepid Ibex (Ubuntu 8.10), and it includes all the latest technologies, such as Linux kernel 2.6.27, GNOME 2.24 or X.Org 7.4. Why is Linux Mint 6 so important? Because it now offers a new, in-house tool called mint4win, which will allow everyone to install the Linux Mint operating system directly from Microsoft Windows!

There are a host of Linux certifications. They range from the high-end Red Hat Certified Engineer (RHCE) and Novell's Novell Linux Certified Engineer (NLCE ) to ones that are appropriate for entry-level Linux system managers, such as the Linux Professional Institute's entry-level LPIC-1. Each are meant to show that those who have them are Linux professionals of one level or another. How much help are they though when it comes from turning your Linux expertise into a Linux job?

kev009 writes to recommend his editorial overbiew of the past, present and future of Linux file systems: ext2, ext3, ReiserFS, XFS, JFS, Reiser4, ext4, Btrfs, and Tux3. "In hindsight it seems somewhat tragic that JFS or even XFS didn't gain the traction that ext3 did to pull us through the 'classic' era, but ext3 has proven very reliable and has received consistent care and feeding to keep it performing decently. ... With ext4 coming out in kernel 2.6.28, we should have a nice holdover until Btrfs or Tux3 begin to stabilize. The Btrfs developers have been working on a development sprint and it is likely that the code will be merged into Linus's kernel within the next cycle or two."

file system. EXT4 can support a file system of up to one Exabyte, and a single file up to 16 Terabyte (EXT3, the current file system mostly used by Linux, can only scale to a 16 terabytes per file system size, and accommodate a maximum file size of only 2 terabytes). EXT4 also allows for unlimited subdirectories, and checksums journal data for extra data integrity.

Linux is an amazingly scalable OS — that is, it can be used on anything from tiny embedded devices to large supercomputer clusters. This scalability is important for Linux as a whole, but it might not seem critical to the average office or home user who runs Linux on a PC, at least not at first. Upon closer examination, though, Linux’s scalability can be a useful boon to PC users. Do you have old computers gathering dust in a corner? Is your desktop system still functional but a bit sluggish because it’s a couple of years old? Did you buy a low-end bargain PC and now regret it because it’s too slow? If you’ve answered “yes” to any of these questions, Linux’s scalability may be the answer to your problems (well, some of them, anyway).

RALEIGH, N.C.--(Business Wire)-- State Employees’ Credit Union (SECU) recently relocated its Salisbury Street branch to the site of the original 1937 SECU location in the basement of the State Agriculture Building in downtown Raleigh. This historic move paves the way for a new state-of-the-art Credit Union facility, providing SECU with a permanent footprint in North Carolina’s State Government Complex. While the move to the Agriculture location is temporary, it offers SECU and its members the opportunity to reflect on the humble beginnings of their cooperative. Starting with 17 members and $437, the Credit Union has experienced tremendous growth and now serves 1.5 million members with nearly $17 billion in assets. The growth of the organization has resulted in the need for a larger SECU facility in the downtown State Capital area.

"The Linux Programmer's Toolbox by John Fusco. Allows your Linux usefulness to go from 0-60 in six seconds. Not totally exhaustive on all tools Linux, but it's brilliant for giving you an up to date map of the Linux development environment. Not only that, but it can give you a greater understanding of any development environment which uses make or GCC. I really can't recommend this book highly enough - it's so well written and laid out that I use it regularly as a reference manual. Not only does it cover many of the useful Linux tools (and shows you how to look for the rest), it covers how the kernel works, gnu make systems, debugging and has a nice comprehensive guide to using Vim and Emacs effectively (although, sadly, it doesn't say which is best - but I think you know the answer to that).

Earlier this year we shared that Valve's Source Engine is coming to Linux after receiving some information that pointed in this direction. In addition, a year ago Valve Software was publicly looking for a senior software engineer to port Windows-based games to Linux platform. There have long been rumors and hopes among Linux users that Steam games would become natively available for Linux, but we have additional confirmation that Valve Software has ported their Steam game client to Linux. In Valve's most recent title, Left 4 Dead, there are shared Linux libraries shipping alongside this Windows game client.

Had a vision for the first Linux commercial you've been wanting to put into place? The Linux Foundation is calling you. Not literally, of course. Beginning January 26th, 2009, the Foundation will be accepting 60-second video offerings from budding directors worldwide to begin their own "I'm Linux" advertising campaign. The winner takes all with "a flight to Narita in Japan from the airport closest to your home plus three nights at a hotel in order for the winner to attend the Linux Foundation Japan's symposium in October next year." Start those rusty creative gears turning-- it's certain that plenty will enter, and only one will win.

Solid State Drives got a big break in 2008, but even though the new drives have become all the more popular they are far from the primary choice for most. Mechanical harddrives still have the advantage from some perspectives, which partly comes from the fact that file and operating systems are poorly optimized for SSDs. Something you rarely see is tests of the SSD technology in alternative operating systems, which makes Phoronix' latest article extra interesting.
