theodp writes "Nine years ago Monday, Amazon kicked off the Holiday Season by slapping Barnes and Noble with a court injunction barring BN from using a checkout feature that Amazon said represented illegal copying of its patented 1-Click technology. 'We're pleased that Judge Pechman recognized the innovation underlying our 1-Click feature,' said Jeff Bezos in a press release. But an Appellate Court wasn't quite as impressed with Amazon's innovation. Nor were USPTO Examiners who were asked to take another look at the merits of Amazon's 1-Click patent claims. Still, 1-Click lives on, although Amazon's lawyers are currently fighting two separate rejections by USPTO Examiners, burying USPTO Examiners in paper, and employing canceling-and-refiling tactics that some may find reminiscent of Eddie Haskell's chess end-game strategy.

theodp writes "In a move that would do pre-makeover Ebenezer proud, Amazon.com's 1-Click lawyers put the USPTO to work on Christmas Eve. On Dec. 24th, the USPTO acknowledged receipt of yet another round of paperwork submitted by Amazon's high-priced legal muscle, the latest salvo in Amazon's 3-year battle to fend off a patent reexamination triggered by the do-it-yourself legal effort of actor Peter Calveley. Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos' 1-Click patent is also under attack on another front — on Dec. 23rd, the USPTO received $810 from Amazon's attorneys together with a request that the agency invalidate Patent Examiner Mark A. Fadok's final rejection of 1-Click patent claims on the grounds of obviousness. On the bright side, patent clerks — unlike Bob Cratchit — get the day after Christmas off!"

Seattle-based Amazon Web Services, Amazon.com's web services arm, said today that it has launched another new service, this time focused on public data sets. According to Amazon, the new "Public Data Sets on AWS" service provides access to a centralized repository of public data, such as U.S. Census databases, 3-D chemical structures, and humane genome information. Amazon said it will host the sets for no charge. The new data will be available from Amazon's EC2 cloud computing service. The public data sets being hosted by Amazon have been available before for download, but have typically taken a large amount of data storage to host and were difficult to access. Amazon said it also hopes to add other data sets, including economic statistics from the Bureau of Economic Analysis and other scientific data sets.

Seattle-based Amazon.com said today that the firm has rolled out a new application on Apple's App Store, the online store for iPhone and iPod Touch applications, which also includes a feature to find products based on a photo. According to Amazon, its new Amazon application allows users to search and browse for products offered by the firm, purchase products, and access other features such as customer reviews. Amazon said the iPhone application will also include a new product matching feature, which will attempt to help users match photos of products taken with their iPhone to the same products, or similar products, on Amazon.com's site. The free application, which is available via iTunes, allows users to snap a photo with their iPhone; that photo is then used by Amazon.

As part of Amazon's AWS service they provide online storage at very low rates via the Amazon Simple Storage Service (S3). S3 combined with the S3 Amazon Firefox Add-on provide an extremely easy to use means to upload files via the Firefox web browser. Just open the add-on that resides in the lower right portion of Firefox, select (double-click) a destination folder or "bucket" as Amazon calls them and then use windows explorer to browse to the file or files you want to transfer, select them, and then drag and drop into the add-on user interface. You are then presented with upload status bars that show the progress until complete. Voila, your files are now uploaded and available to you or anyone you choose via a Unix like Access Control List that sets permissions on folders and files.
