MS Says Windows 7 Will Run DirectX 10 On the CPU: related news

MS Says Windows 7 Will Run DirectX 10 On the CPU

arcticstoat writes "In what could be seen as an easy answer to the Vista-capable debacle, Microsoft has introduced a 'fully conformant software rasterizer' called WARP (Windows Advanced Rasterization Platform) 10, which does away with the need for a dedicated hardware 3D accelerator altogether. Microsoft says that WARP 10 will support all the features and precision requirements of Direct3D 10 and 10.1, as well as up to 8x multi-sampled anti-aliasing, anisotropic filtering and all optional texture formats. The minimum CPU spec needed is just 800MHz, and it doesn't even need MMX or SSE, although it will work much quicker on multi-core CPUs with SSE 4.1. Of course, software rendering on a single desktop CPU isn't going to be able to compete with decent dedicated 3D graphics cards when it comes to high-end games, but Microsoft has released so

Linux kiosks more secure than Windows-based self-service systems, one researcher says

Computerworld: Kiosks running Linux are more secure than those running Windows, says Mac Jones of Whangarei-based Netstop after Computerworld’s report on attack-code targeting Windows kiosks. The Windows operating system was designed for people at home and in offices, who, naturally, wouldn’t try to hack their own computers. But now, most 15-year-olds can pull up information on the Internet and hack a Windows computer, he said. To Jones, it proved too hard to make kiosks safe using Windows and he switched to the Linux OS. Last week, Computerworld reported that an attack tool, targeting Internet kiosks and terminals running Windows, had been released by a New Zealand security researcher, Paul Craig, who works for consultancy Security-Assessment.

Linux and Mac OS X Killing Windows Bit by Bit

Microsoft's Windows operating system continues its downward trajectory on a spiral that is seeing it continually losing “eyeballs.” Even with the launch of Windows XP Service Pack 3 and the fixing of Windows Vista RTM with the release of Service Pack 1, the market share of Windows has continued to drop throughout 2008, and the past month made no exception to the trend. The open source Linux and Apple's Mac OS X proprietary operating systems are eroding the Windows audience bit by bit, and have taken the platform below the 90% market share mark.

Performance Tests Show Early Windows 7 Build Beats Vista

The Other A.N. Other writes "How does the latest build of Windows 7 stack up against Windows Vista? The answer seems to be very well if the benchmarks run by ZDNet are anything to go by. If Microsoft keeps up the good then Windows 7 should be head and shoulders better than Vista. 'What we have here is one set of data points for one particular system, but I think that the results are very promising. The fact that Windows 7 comes out on top in three out of four of these tests at this early stage is very promising indeed. The boot time and PCMark Vantage results are particularly good.'"

Persistence Pays Off With Israel's First Windows Refund

As Niv Lilian reports at Ynet News, Haifa (and the Haifa Linux Club)'s Zvi Devir just preferred to run Linux rather than the pre-installed Windows on his newly bought Dell computer, and didn't want to pay for the unwanted Windows system. Now Devir has prevailed, after a fight in Israeli small-claims court, to become the first Israeli to obtain a Windows refund (also in Hebrew), winning the $137 that Windows added to the cost of his machine and escaping the nondisclosure agreement that Dell had wanted him to abide by as a condition. Perhaps others will follow his lead. Update: 12/03 23:02 GMT by T : Zvi Devir wrote with an update: "BTW, the settlement was out of court, before any court sessions took place."

The Economist Suggests Linux For Netbooks

Trepidity writes "In its roundup of how to choose a netbook, The Economist suggests that users 'avoid the temptation' to go for a Windows-based netbook, and in particular to treat them as mini laptops on which you'll install a range of apps. In their view, by the time you add the specs needed to run Windows and Windows apps effectively, you might as well have just bought a smallish laptop. Instead, they suggest the sweet spot is ultra-lite, Linux-based netbooks, with a focus on pre-installed software that caters to common tasks. They particularly like OpenOffice, which they rate as easier to use than MS Word and having "no compatibility problems", as well as various photo-management software." Besides which, does Windows offer spinning cubes for coffee-shop demos?

Is Windows 7 Too Much Like Mac OS X?

Is Windows 7 leaning too much towards the Mac side of life? Many Microsoft bloggers are saying that it does, that Windows 7 is too much "form over function", something they accuse Apple of. While superficially they may have a point, the differences between Windows and Mac OS X are still glaringly obvious. Are a few changes to the taskbar enough to make Windows OS X-like? Bloggers like Mary-Jo Foley, Paul Thurrot, and others seem to think so.

Microsoft patches Windows CE 6.0

Vista and XP Leave Windows 7 to Deal with Mac OS X and Linux

Neither Service Pack 1 for Windows Vista, nor Service Pack 3 for Windows XP, both made available in 2008, have been able to turn Windows around from its downward trajectory on the operating system market. Even with the latest service packs, Vista and XP have failed to stop the growth of Mac OS X and Linux, both operating systems making inroads into Microsoft's territory. Vista and XP have taken Window's overall usage share down to 88.68% at the end of December 2008, leaving Windows 7 to deal with OS X and Linux.

With the help of Wine you can install Windows applications on Linux. But what if there are Linux applications you want to run on Microsoft Windows? Say, for example, you want to use Dolphin for your file manager instead of Windows Explorer. Thanks to a group of KDE developers, its possible.
