waderoush writes "Aviation enthusiasts have been dreaming of flying cars since the 1940s. But in an old machine shop in Woburn, MA, a team of MIT aero/astro grads is building what could be the first practical airplane that's also certified for highway driving. Angel-funded startup Terrafugia, headed by 2006 Lemelson-MIT Student Prize winner Carl Dietrich, hopes to have its first full-scale proof-of-concept vehicle ready to show off at July's AirVenture aviation festival in Oshkosh, Wisconsin."

COredneck sends us a NYTimes story (registration may be required) about an Internet community solving a crime in less than 48 hours. An auto dealer in Calgary lends a car for a test drive — a 1991 Nissan Skyline GT-R. The test driver and another person don't return the car. The dealer then files a police report, but also posts a message about the stolen car on Beyond.ca, an automotive fan board. Many people who read the board keep their eyes out and find the car. They also use Facebook to find the suspect and his high school; and they use Google Maps to pinpoint the thief's location. They film the collar and post the video on Beyond.ca. The dealer says, "This guy has worldwide recognition for being a car thief for the rest of his life. The Internet is not going away.

According to a top market intelligence and research firm, car dealers are in for a shock. IDC, a Framingham, Massachusetts-based information technology source, says the online used car market in the United States is on the brink of explosive growth, and the big losers in this shift are likely to be car dealers. IDC estimates the online share of all used car sales will jump from under three percent last year to almost 40 percent in 2004. However, the firm warns brick-and-mortar car dealers could put up a roadblock in the marketÂ’s development.

average_cdn writes "Canadians looking to put a stop to pesky telemarketing calls before the federal government's do-not-call registry takes effect this summer have a new tool at their disposal. At IOptOut.ca, Canadians can enter their phone number and e-mail address and simply choose the organizations they would prefer not to hear from while the website generates a mass request that the user be added to those companies' do-not-call lists. The site, a beta version of which was launched yesterday, is the brainchild of University of Ottawa law professor Michael Geist and features information on how to avoid telemarketing calls from more than 140 different companies and organizations. Mr. Geist said that iOptOut helps Canadians finish the job that the do-not-call registry failed to complete.

I am a Michigan artist that specializes in portraits of vehicles. I have been the guest artist at a number of car shows in the Michigan area. I even had the opportunity to meet Dennis Gage last year when he filmed near my tent at the St. Ignace Car show, for his show My Classic Car on the Speed Channel. Doc Watson floated through my tent and took a shine to the Oldsmobile I had drawn.

DEAR BRUCE: Several years ago, my boyfriend's ex-wife stopped paying for a car in her name, and it ended up being repossessed. After that, she filed for bankruptcy. He is now trying to sell his house and discovered that a lien had been put on his property for HER car debt. Why is he being held responsible for a loan in HER name? She's the one who filed for bankruptcy, not him. Is there any way to make her pay the lien so he can sell his house? — Frustrated, via e-mail

KUWAIT CITY : “HH the Amir doesn’t need hypocrites but good people who can convey the facts as they are so that he gets a chance to take the best decisions for the country and its citizens,” says former Parliamentary speaker Jassem Al-Khorafi. When I was a toddler, my parents were friends with a couple who kept a pet monkey in a cage in their dining room. Looking back on this as an adult, it seems… unwise. But I’m sure that as a kid I thought that this was The Coolest Thing Ever. They used to tease the monkey by dangling car keys just out of reach. Then one day I gave the monkey my dad’s car keys, and he (i.e. the monkey) refused to give them back. I’m sure that I found this hilarious, but I cannot remember the incident at all; I only know about it because my mother once used it as an example of what a trouble-maker I had been as a child. The lesson: never give a monkey your car keys. (Corollary: never give a monkey a gun.)
