Raindeer writes "While the Broadband Bandits of the US are contemplating bandwidth caps between 5 gigabyte and 40 gigabyte per month, the largest telco in Japan has gone ahead and laid down some heavy caps for Japan's broadband addicts. From now on, if you upload more than 30 gigabyte per day, your network connection may be disconnected. Just think of it ... if you're in Japan and want to upload the HD movie you shot of yesterday's wedding, you soon might hit the limit. The downloaders do not face similar problems."

MediaDefender is an anti-piracy business that is known primarily because its hired by organizations like RIAA and MPAA to put illegal downloads online in order to trap people who are engaged in illegal filesharing. However, thats not all that MediaDefender is about. Theyre also in the business of offering legal P2P downloads. Theyve done this for awhile (they paired up with Sprint and Atlantic Records last year to offer branded P2P song downloads) but they appear to be getting more aggressive in moving forward with this part of the business. Perhaps thats because their recent efforts at anti-piracy have taken down legitimate sites and placed them in a lot of hot water. Still, you have to wonder, how is a user supposed to know if a file placed online by MediaDefender is legal or illegal to download?

According to Agence France-Presse, the Japanese Economy, Trade, and Industry Ministry has received two new reports of Nanos spontaneously combusting, bringing the total number of reported cases in Japan to 14. In a ministry press release (Japanese), four models were indicted as being associated with the fires: MA004J/A, MA005J/A, MA099J/A and MA107J/A. "Our ministry told Apple to improve its technological development and probe the cause of the incidents so that similar incidents do not happen again," a ministry official said.
