mister_woods writes "It's not just governments that lose private data. Germany's Chaos Computer Club (CCC) reports that market research firm TNS Infratest/Emnid has lost 41,000 private data records of their survey participants. By simply changing the customer ID number in the browser's address bar access could be gained to comprehensive survey results, including names, addresses, dates of birth, email addresses, phone numbers and much more sensitive data. A CCC spokesman described this as 'unprofessional, grossly negligent and above all deeply worrying' and sees this loss as a vindication for its calls for strict regulations for public and private sector data collectors."

Most people haven’t heard anything about Napster since the company went bankrupt in 2002 after lawsuits regarding the illegal filesharing taking place on the site. However, it’s been an active company for the past four years since being bought and re-launched by Roxio Inc. It is now an online music-subscription service that controls about half of its market. Despite this, the company hasn’t turned a profit since the relaunch. CEO Christopher Gorog hopes to change that now that Napster has teamed up with AT&T to offer Napster as a mobile music service; the goal for the company at the current time is to develop similar partnerships with other carriers in order to base revenue growth on the emerging mobile music market. Hey folks, As you may remember, back before I started the DPL job I promised to run a survey. Then I pestered a huge number of people to answer a set of questions and get back to me. I've taken longer than I hoped to read through all those responses and summarise them, but finally I'm done. As I said at the time, I'm *not* going to go into great gory detail about individuals or specific teams here and now. Many of the surveys include personal information and I promised to protect that. Instead, this is just a summary of the results. I'll be following up in more detail with various of the teams in the coming weeks. If you have any questions in the meantime, please feel free to contact me. So, enough of the disclaimers... :-) The raw numbers =============== I sent out 75 mails containing survey questions[1] at the end of April.

azuredrake writes "Facebook, the largest social networking site in the US, has sued German social networking site studiVZ on the grounds that studiVZ has copied the look and feel of Facebook in order to piggyback off their success. According to the article, 'The German company sued by Facebook for running a "knockoff" of the social networking Web site said on Sunday it asked a German court to declare that Facebook's claims are without merit.' However, a simple glance at the two sites' homepages seems to tell a different story — studiVZ copies many things from Facebook, from their button layout down to the font they're using."

snydeq writes "Employment statistics from the US Department of Labor show what most IT people have already realized: IT jobs are getting harder to come by. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, 13,000 jobs in the information industry were cut in July, bringing the total to 44,000 year over year. An additional 5,000 jobs were lost in telecom this past month. The statistics reinforce a recent survey of top CIOs who indicated that they will be reducing their IT staff over the coming year. According to a staffing research firm, some jobs have gone to outsourcers, while other jobs are simply going away, either due to cost-oriented automation efforts or due to increasing the remaining staff's workload."
