Microsoft Suggests Carving Up HTML 5

dp619 writes "HTML 5 is extensive and may take years to complete. Microsoft's solution to hasten its development is to carve it up. The company wants to divide HTML 5 into sub-specifications overseen by different working groups. Internet Explorer platform architect Chris Wilson said that HTML 5 features including its Canvas APIs, offline caching of Web applications' resources, persistent client-side data storage, and peer-to-peer (P2P) networking connection framework would be useful outside of HTML. The WC3 seems to be receptive to the idea and says that a consensus is forming among working group members to do just that."

AJAX and Open Source Communities Must "Liberate" the HTML Web from the Unweb

Web development and customer expectations have far outstripped the table management capabilities of HTML. The web needs to evolve to support building the Rich Internet Applications that people want to use. At the same time, web tools need to evolve to be able to handle the increasing complexity of building these apps. Is the only solution to improve the grid to break HTML by going to a proprietary solution like Silverlight? It is up to the AJAX and open source communities to "liberate" the HTML web from the Unweb.

Google aims to penetrate Deep Web with HTML forms crawling

In a move aimed at taking the search engine giant closer to what's commonly called the Deep Web, Google Inc. Friday said that it has started experimenting to find ways for its search engine to index HTML forms like drop-down boxes and select menus. Over the past few months, Google has been trying out some HTML forms to see if they could discover Web pages that otherwise couldn't be found or indexed for users, noted Googlers Jayant Madhavan and Alon Halevy, members of the Crawling and Indexing team. "For text boxes, our computers automatically choose words from the site that has the form; for select menus, check boxes, and radio buttons on the form, we choose from among the values of the HTML," they noted in a blog post.

More XML Fundamentals

Since its introduction in 1996, XML has become one of the hottest Web-based design-modeling languages around. As you may know--particularly if you read the first installment of this article (see Web Developer , DB2 Magazine, Quarter 2, 2001)--XML is a metalanguage, a language that describes other languages. Through the description and use of data modeling, XML takes HTML into the dynamic realm of Internet technologies, linking with other standard programming languages such as Visual Basic, Active Server Pages (ASP), Java, and Javascript. And with the advent of Extensible Stylesheet Language (XSL), the dynamic activity behind the static face of HTML pages can reach new levels before they are sent in final form to the end Web surfer's browser.

Handcoding HTML Is Still in Vogue

Back in 1994, when I first learned to write HTML code for display in NCSA Mosaic, I thought, "There's got to be a better way." After all, I was coming off nearly a decade of typesetting and working with desktop publishing, starting with a Mac Plus and PageMaker 1.0 at my high school's newspaper. The code never bothered me; I had also learned in high school how to code on a Compugraphic typesetting system that used a similar method of embedded tags for formatting. But this was 1994! Surely, we should have been able to have a graphical editor that would put a nice wrapper around HTML's intricacies.

Lovingly Craft Your HTML

When I wrote about the New York Times's design director Khoi Vinh's comment that he and his staff still hand code their HTML, this stirred a fair amount of both nostalgic and contemporary reverie among TidBITS readers (see "Hand Coding HTML Is Still in Vogue," 2008-04-28). Slashdot picked up Vinh's comment separately, and many readers there seemed to misunderstand - they thought Vinh was saying that every page on the Times' site was being created by hand. One commenter wrote, "Handcoding takes far more time than is necessary in a changing scenario of today's news. Effort not proportional to returns. As a shareholder, i [sic] would sue them for wasting money."

FAQ: what is the index.html page for?

It was pointed out to me yesterday that I've never explained what the index.html page does on a website. Since nearly every site on the Internet has an index.html page, knowing what they are for and how you use them is pretty critical. Did you know that there are 3 types of default pages?
