Science News reports on recent research indicating that any kind of multitasking while driving is dangerous. Not just the obvious distraction of juggling a cell phone, but even talking to a passenger or listening to a book on tape. The researchers used a driving simulator inside an MRI machine to measure brain activations. "Attending to what someone says galvanizes language-related brain areas while simultaneously reducing activity in spatial regions that coordinate driving behavior. This finding suggests that people who combine relatively automatic tasks, such as speech comprehension and car driving, exceed a biological limit on the amount of systematic brain activity they can accommodate at one time, the researchers propose. As a result, the less-ingrained skill — in this case, driving, which is learned long after a person grasps a na

McAfee says .HK domain is most dangerous of all It isn't fair to judge a book by its cover, but is it fair to judge a domain name by its TLD? Apparently it is, and a new report published by McAfee confirms that certain TLDs are more dangerous to visit, on average, than others. In particular, they flagged 3 TLDs as exceptionally dangerous, with two to three times the percentage of dangerous sites as others. McAfee lists the .hk, .cn and .info TLDs as the most dangerous, with .hk being the most dangerous of all. Of all the sites queried in .hk, more than 19% were flagged as dangerous or “potentially dangerous” (whatever that means), compared to 11.8% of .cn domains and 11.7% of .info domains. This is all compared to .com, which ranked at only 5% - but, as it is the most popular TLD, the numbers may be diluted.

Apple, maker of the iPod media player, said its iTunes online store has sold more than 5 billion songs since its debut five years ago as more fans abandon record shops for the Web. The site is the most popular in the United States for legal music downloads, with more than 8 million songs. ITunes customers also are renting or buying more than 50,000 movies a day, Apple said Thursday in a statement. Sales of CDs and music DVDs fell 13 percent to $15.9 billion last year, the International Federation of the Phonographic Industry said yesterday. Sales of downloaded songs and mobile-phone ring tones rose 34 percent to $2.9 billion.

CWRUisTakingMyMoney writes "Companies that assign addresses for Web sites appear to be cutting corners on security more when they assign names in certain domains than in others, according to a report to be released Wednesday by antivirus software vendor McAfee Inc. McAfee found the most dangerous domains to navigate to are .hk, .cn, and .info. Of all .hk sites McAfee tested, it flagged 19.2 percent as dangerous or potentially dangerous to visitors; it flagged 11.8 percent of .cn sites and 11.7 percent of .info sites that way. A little more than 5 percent of the sites under the .com domain — the world's most popular — were identified as dangerous."

Does your cell phone bill ever reach astronomical proportions? Maybe you're doing too much texting. One space scientist has worked out that sending texts via mobile phones works out to be far more expensive than downloading data from the Hubble Space Telescope. Dr. Nigel Bannister from the University of Leicester looked at the cost of obtaining a megabyte of data from Hubble and compared it with the cost of sending a text. His calculations? “The bottom line is texting is at least 4 times more expensive than transmitting data from Hubble, and is likely to be substantially more than that."

Google plans to expand its finance Web site by adding more historical data and company filings as it tries to gain ground on more-popular services from Yahoo and AOL. The company will also seek to improve its 2-year-old finance site by offering real-time stock prices from the New York Stock Exchange on a permanent basis after a four-month pilot started this week, said R.J. Pittman, director of product management. Google's finance pages had 2.07 million U.S. visitors last month, ranking 13th on researcher ComScore's list of top financial sites. The company plans to use its search technology to help users find data more efficiently, rather than adding editorial content to lure more users, Pittman said. Adding features such as up-to-the-minute stock quotes will help Google lure more visitors that may then visit the company's other sites, sai

eldavojohn writes "The watch-dog group Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD) has set its sights on the rating of GTA IV, primarily because a player can drive drunk in the game. MADD released a statement saying that 'Drunk driving is not a game, and it is not a joke. Drunk driving is a choice, a violent crime and it is also 100 percent preventable.' MADD also is asking Rockstar Games to consider removing GTA IV from distribution 'out of respect for the millions of victims/survivors of drunk driving.' Rockstar replied to MADD by saying 'we have a great deal of respect for MADD's mission, but we believe the mature audience for "Grand Theft Auto IV" is more than sophisticated enough to understand the game's content.' As expected, Jack Thompson is making his usual attention-whoring remarks by comparing GTA IV to the polio virus.

"More and more, open source projects are either integrating with the web or are developed entirely for on-demand use. This requires strong web development skills--or at least good enough tools to rescue you if any of your web development skills are weak. The good news is that there are many free open source tools to help you with your web project, and given the costs of web development environments and the like, they can save you a lot of money. Here are more than five good examples.

I never thought of it this way, but Dan Frommer over at Silicon Alley Insider has done an interesting comparison between the decade-old iMac and the iPhone. The short version? The iPhone wins on most metrics. It has a faster processor, more memory, and even more storage capacity, and far outdistances the specs of the original 1984 Mac. Send it back in time and an iPhone, would have more than enough power to guide the moon landing, provided NASA had a copy of the SDK.

So Warney is still king of all he surveys. It takes more than last year's adulatory farewell to Tests in Sydney to keep a monarch down and I wonder whether he views with a wry smile the current state of the Australia team, now that the full impact of the absence of any spinner of quality has become apparent, Stuart MacGill having also called it a day. Less hysterical observers have noted that, while there is history of resurrection stretching back several thousand years, it doesn't generally work well in sport, although if anyone in cricket could manage it, Shane could. But then why would he? It's a nice line to string the media along for a while but surely now there is too much dosh to be made elsewhere and too many poker tables on which to lose it again.
