bugging calls compressed voip vulnerable
holy_calamity writes "Security researchers at Johns Hopkins report that a variable bit-rate compression scheme being rolled out on VoIP systems leaves encrypted calls vulnerable to bugging. Simpler syllables are squeezed into smaller data packets, with more complex ones taking up more space; the researchers built software that uses this to spot phrases of interest in encrypted calls simply by measuring packet size."

One of the biggest challenges of VoIP – especially the open source variety – is that it is diffuse and confusing, especially to a market raised on simple, plug-and-play hardware and software options. But open source, in all its manifestations, has become deeply ingrained in the world of VoIP. As tricky as it may be, understanding the nuances of open source VoIP can lead to big savings and, perhaps more importantly, platforms that do what the organization wants them to.

Technology that allows phones to use the Internet rather than traditional networks to place and receive calls could be coming to the iPhone. Global IP Solutions says it will make its VoIP technology available to developers writing iPhone apps. iPhone VoIP applications would presumably function only with a WiFi connection rather than an EDGE or 3G cellular data signal.

The OS-VOIP blog today writes that most small-mid sized businesses exploring the move to a new phone system will consider the ups and downs between purchasing a premise based IP PBX or a hosted VoIP solution. These days I think purchasing an old TDM phone system instead of an IP based system is about as smart as buying a VHS player so lets assume that most businesses won’t go this route.

"The popularity of the iPhone, along with the emergence of various applications and faster connectivity, makes it an ideal platform for developing applications that incorporate quality real-time VoIP," said Emerick Woods, CEO of Global IP Solutions (GIPS), as GIPS yesterday announced that it is enabling voice over IP (VoIP) for Apple's iPhone.

Kevin Maney writes: I'd had a number of calls with friends who were using iPhones get mysteriously dropped over and over. Turns out it's part of a global trend. The iPhone 3G chips have a bug that can cause them to lose calls when shifting between 3G and 2G networks. A software fix is supposed to be ready next week.

Andre Charland recently bought an iPhone 3G, the Apple phone that hit the market on July 11. But the Canadian software executive isn't giving up his BlackBerry Pearl. He says the BlackBerry is a "workhorse" for email and phone calls, while the iPhone isn't as reliable. "I've just had dropped calls and issues like that," he says. "I have the iPhone mostly for fun," like watching video or browsing the web. The reason for the iPhone's reception problems is in dispute. Two sources, including one close to Apple, say the issue is a chip from Infineon that manages wireless communication.

Yesterday's release of iPhone 2.0.2 has been mostly welcomed by the ever-critical iPhone-using contingency, but as usual, the firmware is not without its problems. We were able to confirm that the update addresses a few 3G-related issues (but not some of the major 3G problems people are having quite yet), and overall, users are reporting apparent improvements to signal level and the ability to make calls. It's that last part—the ability to make calls—that is tanking for some other users, however, thanks to the iPhone 2.0.2 update.
