elucido writes "OFF, or the Owner-Free Filesystem is a distributed filesystem in which everything is stored in reference to randomized data blocks, as opposed to a 1:1 copy of the original data being inserted. The creators of the Owner-Free Filesystem have coined a new term to define the network: A brightnet. Nobody shares any copyrighted files, and therefore nobody needs to hide away. OFF provides a platform through which data can be stored (publicly or otherwise) in a discreet, distributed manner. The system allows for personal privacy because data (blocks) being transferred from peer to peer do not bear any relation to the original data. Incidentally, no data passing through the network can be considered copyrighted because the means by which it is represented is truly random.

KentuckyFC writes "Astronomers have discovered some 250 planetary systems beyond our own, many of them with curious properties. In particular, our theories of planet formation are challenged by 'hot Jupiters,' gas giants that orbit close to their parent stars. Current thinking is that gas giants can only form far away from stars because gas and dust simply gets blown away from the inner regions. Now astronomers have used computer simulations of the way planetary systems form to understand what is going on (abstract). It looks as if gas giants often form a long way from stars and then migrate inwards. That has implications for us: a migrating gas giant sweeps away all in its path, including rocky planets in the habitable zone. And that means that solar systems like ours are likely to be rare.

Web analytics and log analysis tools are a great way to track what's happening on your website. And as my MBA professors were always saying, "you get what you measure." So, hopefully you are already using one of these free toosl or perhaps an even better paid or homemade analytics tool of your own. It's important to know what's happening on your site so that you can improve things. And before you ask, yes, Google Analytics is on the list, but no, it's not number 1. (I was as surprised as you are.)

Organizations are rapidly consolidating multiple physical servers to virtual environments. There is no debating the cost savings and operational benefits of virtualization. The issues that are now arising as virtualization continues to proliferate are rooted in management and how organizations can gain cost visibility and recover the costs of their virtualization projects. JUNE 2008 - In this digital age, most business activities are transacted and recorded using networked information systems. Business and accounting records are prepared, reviewed, audited, and preserved in electronic form, commonly called electronically stored information (ESI). It is estimated that 94% to 99% of all business records are created and maintained in electronic form (National Law Journal, July 17, 2006) and most are never transformed into hard copy. A unique characteristic of electronic records is that they include hidden metadata that comprise extensive information about the creation of a file, including “MAC dates” (the dates a file was modified, accessed, and created), the date last printed, and, if deleted, when it was deleted and by whom.

Systems administrators are very busy people. Sometimes a bit of common sense programming can go a long way toward eliminating some of the repetitive tasks associated with systems administration. Perl can be used to automate many recurring tasks. AccountCheck is an example Perl script that automatically checks for problems that can occur when user accounts are made and deleted without every necessary step being completed. Partially created or deleted accounts can be a security hazard, acting as hidden doors to let intruders enter a system. Most systems have such hidden doors. This Perl script checks for all the common types of errors that can occur. It checks the following:

Justifying an enterprise architecture (EA) tools investment continues to be a problem — particularly when compared with just using Microsoft Visio. So what are the alternatives for inexpensive EA tooling? We investigated five scenarios that can provide a lightweight- or limited-coverage EA tool solution, and we found that the cheapest open source solutions today are very limited and only the more expensive solutions deliver EA value. Free downloads — such as TIBCO Software's Business Studio, which has free business process (BP) analysis for a single user — provide some interesting partial solutions. So, are there cheap EA tool solutions? Yes; but architects must understand their limitations from the beginning because migrating to a different EA tool midcourse is often very painful.

Software developers and programmers are bound by convention and capitalism. Some of the software that they design isnt free, so the patches and fixes that they provide are distributed in small executables that cant be read by likeminded technophiles. This is unfortunate for a number of reasons. Firstly, the fact that the clever authors of these programs hide their source code from the public means that independent developers are prevented from providing ad hoc patches of their own. An independent software designer (and there are many out there) may have a glaringly obvious solution to a problem that the proprietors of the software have spent weeks scratching their heads over.

Firebrand Training warns SMEs are making it easy for hackers - SMEs are endangering critical corporate information because they are failing to adequately secure their wireless networks. Failure to change preset simple ‘admin’ security settings, or choosing easy-to-crack passwords and allowing the network to be visible to potential attackers are the three most common mistakes made by small and medium businesses with their wireless setup. Firebrand Training is urging SMEs to take a more proactive approach to their wireless security – and they say it is by learning the tricks used by hackers that they will stay one step ahead of potential attacks. The Accelerated Learning pioneer has launched a White Paper “Wireless networks: are we just leaving the stable door wide open?”,outlining the key strategies employed by hackers against co

Shortly thereafter, references to the free Wi-Fi again popped up briefly on the AT&T website, only to disappear with the company offering no comment. Now a user submits this link to our news queue showing that references to free AT&T Wi-Fi for smartphones has once again popped up on the AT&T website. Says big blue:

Dads are a tricky subject. Some are loving and inspiring whilst others absent and off hand. Some are communicative and open, whilst others are as hard to fathom as the depths of Loch Ness. Some are in touch with their creativity and at ease with their feminine side, whilst others are purely manly. Although the people I've got to know through Family Gamer talk about their dads in different ways, they all seem to agree that they make up a big part of what it is to be a family.

I've got this site I maintain that I need to give access to the owners and content developers. One of them is quite proficient in HTML, the rest, well, if I tell you they only got high speed internet last year, would that explain things? I've decided I want to use a content management system (CMS) to manage the site. It needs to be easy to use for the content owners and easy for me to maintain. But how to decide? I've installed Joomla! and Drupal to test and even got e107 to try. Then I came across this article from Web Distortion: 13 free CMS options for Web Design Professionals Reviewed. Paul did an excellent mini-review of 13 free CMS tools, plus there are several other ones he didn't review listed below. But man! I didn't know I had so many to choose from! At least now I have some idea.

There are two things I'm kind of bad at: drinking water and taking my vitamins. I know that both are very important because they give you energy and make you look and feel healthy, but I still have a hard time consuming them on a regular basis. That's where 4C Totally Light 2Go Vitamin Stix come in. I have to admit I was skeptical about these little packets of powder. Maybe they'd taste chalky or artificial or too fruity or not fruity enough. Turns out, they made my water taste delicious, and they are chock full of Vitamin A, B, and C as well as zinc and other antioxidants to keep me energized and keep my immune system strong. I think the best part is that they are calorie-free and sugar-free, so I am not tacking on liquid calories to my daily intake (I prefer to chew my calories because food rocks).
