Adobe Officially Kills GoLive

After moving GoLive out to pasture after the release of Creative Suite 3, Adobe finally moved the Web site design application to the digital dustbin on Monday. Adobe stated that it chose to stop GoLive development and support "so we can instead focus our development and sales resources on our market-leading web design and development application, Adobe Dreamweaver."

Adobe is giving a sneak peek at three applications from the next release of Adobe Creative Suite, its collection of graphic design, Web development and video editing applications. The company released public beta versions of Adobe Dreamweaver, Adobe Fireworks and Adobe Soundbooth as free downloads via Adobe labs. Once downloaded and launched, the betas will be active for 48 hours after which time only Creative Suite 3 customers will have an extended ability to use the betas until the next release of Creative Suite becomes available.

Adobe on Monday announced that GoLive website creation tool has been discontinued in favor of Dreamweaver, the popular design tool acquired from Macromedia a little more than three years ago; confirming reports from a almost two years ago (which the company later denied and subsequently promised continued support), Adobe said it has ceased development and sales of the effective Monday, April 28, 2008. However, despite the Macworld report, the software was still available for sale (and as an upgrade) on Adobe's website early Monday morning.

The rumor mill has long held that Dreamweaver, a web development tool that came into the Adobe fold following the 2005 acquisition of Macromedia, would one day replace GoLive and now it seems that the day has finally arrived.

The move has been expected for some time. GoLive will be removed from the Adobe store as of 5 pm (Pacific) today (Monday, April 28).

Adobe Releases AIR for Linux

Adobe has showed its support for Linux and open source by releasing its Adobe AIR software for Linux and joining the Linux Foundation. Adobe AIR for Windows and Mac was launched last year. The addition of a Linux version of Adobe AIR will allow Linux developers to build RIAs -- and may garner support for Adobe in the Linux community.

Available on Mac OS or PC, Photoshop is used as one of the leading image design programs for the World Wide Web. The most recent version of Photoshop, or Photoshop CS2, "bridges" between other Adobe products such as Image Ready, Illustrator, Premiere, After Effects, and Encore DVD to produce professional videos and DVDs.
