An exciting new home theater experience is coming to living rooms this holiday season. At the E3 Media and Business Summit, Microsoft Corp. (Nasdaq “MSFT”) and Netflix, Inc. (Nasdaq: NFLX), the world’s largest online movie rental service, today unveiled an exclusive partnership to offer consumers the ability to instantly stream movies and TV episodes from Netflix to the television via the Xbox 360 video game and entertainment system. Xbox 360 will be the only game system that lets users instantly watch movies and TV episodes streamed from Netflix. This movie watching innovation will be available to Xbox LIVE Gold members who are also Netflix subscribers and will let those users enjoy streaming movies from Netflix on Xbox LIVE at no additional cost.

Gamepolitics notes that starting next Monday, Xbox Live users will be able to register to vote using their game console. They'll also be able to participate in polls and "voice their opinions to the presidential candidates." Quoting the press release: "This is the first time that Rock the Vote has joined forces with an entertainment partner such as Xbox to reach voters under 30. Los Angeles - Bringing the vision of the digital living room one step closer, Microsoft announced an alliance with Netflix Monday whereby the leading online video rental company will stream movies over the internet to the Xbox 360 video game console. Microsoft announced the move at the opening of the E3 video game convention in Los Angeles. The deal will allow owners of the Microsoft video game console to access 10,000 movies offered by Netflix - twice as many as Netflix previously offered over its internet streaming service to PCs.

Microsoft plans to halt the sale of any unauthorized Xbox Live software at the App Store, one developer claims. 1337pwn says that its Xbox Live Friends Application -- which lets people see what others are playing on their Xboxes of Xbox 360s -- was recently challenged by Microsoft, which is responsible for all facets of Xbox gaming. 1337pwn comments, though, that Microsoft appears only to be concerned about people turning a profit on its technology, as it has given permission for XLFA to be distributed for free.

OK, this is hard to run down exactly, because there's a Live Weekend going on right now, which means you can play online for free on Xbox Live. But reader Draco, a Silver level gamer, says that he's been playing cross-platform multiplayer games for free since Wednesday night, which precedes the Live Weekend (which started at midnight Friday.)

Microsoft hasn't released its own Xbox Live iPhone app (and we're kinda thinking they won't), but it's definitely cool letting developers fill the gap, on one condition: They can't charge for the app. Of the three Live apps in the App Store, two are free right now, though iLive still charges $1.99, even though it has the worst interface of the three.
