Speaking with CustomPC, Intel Senior Vice President Pat Gelsinger said that NVIDIA's CUDA initiative and other programming models like CUDA, which harnesses the power of the GPU to perform tasks that have traditionally been handled by CPUs will be an "interesting footnote in the history of computing annals". According to Gelsinger, developers aren't willing to learn to program for it: "The problem that we’ve seen over and over and over again in the computing industry is that there’s a cool new idea, and it promises a 10x or 20x performance improvements, but you’ve just got to go through this little orifice called a new programming model,’ Gelsinger explained to Custom PC. Those orifices, says Gelsinger, have always been ‘insurmountable as long as the general purpose computing models evolve into the future.

MojoKid writes "During SIGGRAPH 2008 in Los Angeles, NVIDIA is demonstrating a fully interactive GPU-based ray tracer. The demo is based purely on NVIDIA GPU technology, and according to NVIDIA the ray tracer shows linear scaling during rendering of a complex, two-million polygon, anti-aliased automotive styling application. The article reproduces screenshots from NVIDIA's demo. At three bounces (rays being traced as they bounce three times through a scene), performance is demonstrated at up to 30fps at HD resolutions of 1920x1080 for an image-based lighting paint shader, ray-traced shadows, reflections and refractions running on four next-generation Quadro GPUs in an NVIDIA Quadro Plex 2100 D4 Visual Computing System." Rambus, a designer of high-speed memory chips, said it sued computer-graphics chip maker Nvidia for patent infringement after the two failed to reach a licensing agreement. Los Altos-based Rambus claims certain Nvidia products, including chipsets, graphics processors and other items from six Nvidia product lines, violate 17 Rambus patents, according to a complaint filed Thursday in federal court in San Jose. Rambus said it's seeking a court order that would halt the unlicensed use of its technology, plus cash compensation. "We have been in long-term negotiations and discussions with Nvidia for many years," Rambus General Counsel Thomas Lavelle said. "We basically got to a point where we ran out of options" other than to sue, he said. Calisa Cole, a spokeswoman for Santa Clara-based Nvidia didn't return a call seeking comment.

NVIDIA reported their Q2 results after the close of the market yesterday, and the numbers aren't pretty. After coming off a record Q1 revenue, NVIDIA earned $892.7 million last quarter, a decrease of 5% from last year's Q2. Overall NVIDIA went into the red last quarter, losing $120.9 million. The largest cause for the loss was the $196 million charge NVIDIA took to repair and replace laptops with GPUs containing weak die/packaging material.

JagsLive sends in a story (in somewhat inflammatory prose) from The Inquirer, which links to many others; they have been following developments in the alleged NVidia quality "fiasco" for some time. "Hot on the heels of its denials that anything is wrong with the G92 and G94s comes another PCN [Product Change Notification] that shows the G92s and G92b are being changed for no reason. Yup, the problems that are plaguing G84 and G86 are the same that affect seemingly all 65nm and now 55nm NVidia parts... It is hard to overstate how bad this is. Basically every 65nm and 55nm NVidia part appears to be defective... We are hearing of early failure rates in the teens percent for 8800GTs and far higher for 9600GTs... To make matters worse, NVidia has a mound of unsold defective parts that they are going to bleed out into the channel along side of

NVIDIA today formally released the finished version of CUDA 2.0. The second generation of the company's general-purpose programming language for its video chipsets supports 64-bit versions of Mac OS X and Windows Vista and adds support for instructions that can help offload more specific tasks from the main processor to the video card, such as 3D textures and hardware-accelerated interpolation of information.

theodp writes "Judge Faith Hochberg has denied a preliminary injunction sought by the Programmers Guild to put a hold on a controversial 'emergency' rule change by the Department of Homeland Security to permit foreign students to work continuously in the US for two-and-a-half years after graduation without an H-1B visa. Hochberg indicated she failed to see how an increased labor supply could result in wage depression for engineers and computer workers. That seems disingenuous, since in Andaya v. Citizens Mortgage Corporation, Judge Hochberg recently saw first-hand how a US employer got away with paying an H-1B computer engineer as little as $15,000 to do a job with a 'prevailing wage rate' of $41,000. In that case, Hochberg ruled against Filipino H-1B visa holder Almira Andaya, arguing that 'nonpayment of wages as listed on the H-1B visa

Quantum dot (QD) nanoparticles have received attention due to their fluorescent characteristics and potential use in medical applications. Skin penetration is one of the major routes of exposure for nanoparticles to gain access to a biological system. QD655 and QD565 coated with carboxylic acid were studied for 8 and 24 h in flow-through diffusion cells with flexed, tape-stripped and abraded rat skin to determine if these mechanical actions could perturb the barrier and affect penetration. Nonflexed skin did not show QD penetration 8 or 24 h. Flexed skin showed an increase in QD on the surface of the skin but no penetration at 8 and 24 h. Tape-stripped skin depicted QD only on the surface of the viable epidermis. QD655 penetrated into the viable dermal layers of abraded skin at both 8 and 24 h, while QD565 was present only at 24 h.

Barence sends this excerpt from PC Pro: "Nvidia has delivered a scathing criticism of Intel's Larrabee, dismissing the multi-core CPU/GPU as wishful thinking — while admitting it needs to catch up with AMD's current Radeon graphics cards. 'Intel is not a stupid company,' conceded John Mottram, chief architect for the company's GT200 core. 'They've put a lot of people behind this, so clearly they believe it's viable. But the products on our roadmap are competitive to this thing as they've painted it. And the reality is going to fall short of the optimistic way they've painted it. As [blogger and CPU architect] Peter Glaskowsky said, the "large" Larrabee in 2010 will have roughly the same performance as a 2006 GPU from Nvidia or ATI.' Speaking ahead of the opening of the annual NVISION expo on Monday, he also admitted Nvidia 'underestimat
