Because of the current state of the economy and New York State's dire budget woes, New York state residents might be surprised to find that Governor David Paterson's new $121 billion budget proposal looks to tax items and services that have been traditionally been tax free in the state, including digital downloads. According to Ron Deutsch, executive director of the New Yorkers for Fiscal Fairness advocacy group, "the governor is nickel-and-diming working class families" with his new budget proposal.

Details Leak Out About Palm's New Nova Phone Launching At CES

Palm is expected to unveil its first device, running its new operating system, this Thursday at the big Consumer Electronic Show in Las Vegas, and of course, there’s some minor details leaking out early. They are pretty vague, and who knows if they are spot on, but TechCrunch is quoting “a trusted source” as saying the first phone will have a full Qwerty keyboard that will slide down under a touchscreen. The new operating system is described as “amazing” and there will come with a ton of software and have media playback functions along with standard Palm calendar, email, and contact functionality.

Palm Will Use CES 2009 to Introduce Its 'Nova' Platform

Palm has scheduled a press conference during the Consumer Electronics Show in January 2009. According to BusinessWeek, Palm will use that opportunity to introduce its next-generation operating system, called Nova. Palm is aiming this new OS -- and the devices that use it -- at what Palm calls the "fat middle", or the range of users that fit between business-oriented devices from RIM and fun devices such as the Apple iPhone. Palm will also introduce a range of new devices that use the new OS, which will include smartphones and other devices, such as gaming handhelds. No details about the new operating system were shared, but Palm hopes to regain 2% of all mobile phone sales with its new OS and devices.

Court Halts New York Slot Auction: AINonline

The U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia yesterday granted a petition by the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey to order a stay of the FAAs plans to auction takeoff and landing slots at Newark Liberty International Airport and New York JFK and La Guardia Airports. The ruling will at least delay the FAAs plans to start gradually reallocating 10 percent of the slots airlines now operate free of charge until the Obama Administration takes office. The agency had scheduled the first auction for January 12. Championed by the Bush Administrations DOT as a cost effective, competitive way to alleviate congestion over New Yorks busy airspace, the plan drew condemnation from the airlines and Congressional leaders, as well as an opinion by the Government Accountability Office that the department did not carry the legal author

While I have just stopped using my old Palm Treo 650 and got myself a HTC Touch HD, crunchgear is quite confirmed that the company will make a big announcement coming Thursday during the CES. Powered by its new Nova operating system, Palm will present their new smartphone and it will have a sliding QWERTY keyboard. I am not too excited on the new slider but would definitely want to see what the new Nova OS can provide.

PHOTOS: Goldmine of New Species Discovered in Southeast Asia

The "dragon millipede" (pictured here) is one of more than 1,000 new species discovered around the Mekong River in Southeast Asia over the last 10 years. Scientists suggest the millipede uses its bright color to warn predators of its toxicity. According to a new report by conservation group World Wildlife Fund (WWF), between 1997 and 2007, at least 1,068 new species have been discovered in the Greater Mekong, at a rate of approximately two new species a week.
