With new Wii Sports, Wii Music, the Wii's future is casual

Nintendo's press conference held few surprises, but a new Animal Crossing, Wii Sports, and the announcement of Wii Music show that Nintendo is more dedicated to the casual market than ever. Ars reports from Nintendo's E3 press conference.

Nintendo Wii Sports Resort and Wii Music

Here at the E3 2008 games expo, I got the chance to spend some quality time with early builds of Nintendo's latest 'Wii Series' games: Wii Sports Resort (a sequel to Wii Sports) and Wii Music (once planned as a Wii console launch title). The early verdict: Both deliver the irreverent fun you'd expect, coupled with some crafty control methods that you perhaps wouldn't. Both are sure to be popular – even Wii Music – though I'm still not 100 percent sold on it.

Nintendo revealed a new accessory for their Wii console: the Wii MotionPlus. The MotionPlus essentially brings 1:1 controls to the Wii Remote controller. Comcast Makes Wii Give Away Promotion Official - Starting today for triple-play customers...

Some additional information on the free Wii promotion that insiders leaked last week now comes via more official channels: From today until August 17, 2008, new customers who sign up for Comcast Preferred Plus or Premier Triple Play package will receive a complimentary Wii system. New Wii Disc Dumper Copies Games to SD Cards

The first Wii Disc Dumper required a PC and 50 hours of backup time. The latest v1.2 by nitrotux requires only a Wii loaded with an SD card to make backups of single and dual layer Wii titles as well as GameCube games. The only catch is that the Wii needs to be rebooted during the process quite a few times (3 for SL DVD, 6 for DL DVD and 1 for a GameCube disc). This Wii Sqweeze demo by InterAction Labs supposedly does for your upper body what Wii Fit does for the lower body of the 10 people who actually managed to find one. The thing is essentially two squeezable grips (exactly like the kind you can get at sports stores now) that correspond to claws and bows and other activities on screen. It's not a real Wii game now, but just a PC demo running off a Wiimote tied via USB to a Wii. Could it be a real Wii game? Wii Motion Plus Delivers Better Motion Feedback, At A Cost

Both Engadget and Gizmodo have had some hands on experience with the new MotionPlus accessory for the Wii remote that claims to deliver 1:1 motion tracking. Opinion seems to be divided, with Engadget taking the view that the new accessory doesn't add much that the original remote couldn't already do. Gizmodo are wholly more positive in their first impressions, claiming it finally delivers the kind of motion response that was expected when the Wii first launched. iPhone 3G’s launch is just 3 days away and due New Zealanders will be first people to get hold of new iPhone. Due to New Zealand’s graphical location Vodafone will become first company to sell iPhone 3Gs at 12:01 a.m. (New Zealand’s local time). Vodafone will kick off iPhone 3G’s sales at three local stores in New Zealand, Auckland City, Wellington, and Christchurch. Vodafone has announced three 24-month plans for iPhone. Plans vary from $60 ($80 NZD) to $189 ($250 NZD) per month.

Newegg Defies New York Sales Tax Law

JagsLive informs us that the electronics retailer Newegg.com is defying New York lawmakers; it has suddenly stopped collecting sales tax from New York online shoppers. The "Amazon tax," which went into effect June 1, requires online merchants to collect sales tax if they have any affiliates in the state. Amazon is complying but has sued the state on constitutional grounds. Overstock.com dropped all of its New York affiliates and then joined the Amazon lawsuit. Newegg started out complying with the law on June 1, but stopped collecting taxes for New York on August 21. From Newegg's letter to its customers: "After careful review and consideration, we are pleased to inform you that we have stopped collecting New York sales tax, effective August 21, 2008," reads an email the company tossed at customers late last week, including at least one l
