DS, Wii Totally Cooling Off In Japan

Kotaku: In 2006, the DS ruled Japan. (Heck, in 2007, too.) The hardware was hard to come by, and things got so back in 2006 that American DSes were re-imported into Japan to satisfy the demand. Things have tailed off considerably. According to Nintendo’s Q1 FY3/09 statement, DS hardware sales dwindled, moving 580,000 units in Q1 this year. In last year’s Q1, Nintendo moved a staggering 2 million plus DSes. Hardware isn’t the only thing that suffered; DS software sales are down as well. Last year’s Q1, 979,000 units of DS software were sold, compared to this part quarter’s 493,000 units of DS software.

Roogoo Headed for Wii and DS With Connectivity Support

SouthPeak Games today announced that its critically acclaimed puzzle game Roogoo will release on the Wii and the Nintendo DS later this year. Roogoo, which was previously released on Xbox LIVE Arcade for the Xbox 360 video game and entertainment system from Microsoft, features DS & Wii cross-compatibility, all-new levels and game modes that take advantage of the unique features of the motion-sensitive Wii Remote and Nintendo DS touch screen and stylus.

Liquid Metal CPU Heatsink Beats Water Cooling

unassimilatible writes "Bios Magazine is reporting that the world's first commercially available liquid-metal based CPU cooler is about to ship. Danamics, a Danish company, claims that its LM-10 outperforms standard air-cooled heatsinks and most watercooled systems with a mere 1W power draw. 'The liquid metal is a key component in Danamics cooling systems. Liquid metal has two major advantages when cooling high power density heat sources: Firstly it has superior thermo physical properties that decrease temperature — and temperature non-uniformity — on die and across chips. Secondly, the electrical properties of the liquid metal enables efficient, reliable and ultra compact electromagnetic pumping without the use of moving parts, shafts, seals, etc.

Metal Gear Online Stand-Alone Cover Art Revealed (Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots)

During MGS4 signing event held in Tokyo recently, Konami has confirmed that Metal Gear Online component of MGS4 will soon be available separately in Japan for 1800 Yen (about $17 USD). No word on pricing and dates for the standalone version of Metal Gear Online in other territories.

New Pokmon DS headed to US

Nintendo has unveiled a new Nintendo DS Limited Edition Pokémon Pack. The Pack includes a Pokémon-themed Nintendo DS and exclusive Pokémon premiums.

Japan Pays $20 For Metal Slug 7 Soundtrack, Everyone Else Gets it for Free

The official Metal Slug 7 website went up some days ago, and tucked away in the downloads section is the entire soundtrack for the game. A cool treat for those who follow the franchise's music, but even funnier when you note that they just released the soundtrack for 2,000 yen on iTunes in Japan. Granted, they can easily download the music from the official website too, but will they think to look at the US website?

Metal Gear Solid 4 Thrown In For Free

Kotaku writes: "Previously, we brought word that Metal Gear Solid 4 appeared to be hitting the bargain bin - a mere month and a half after the game was released. (A shame, because it is a great game, even if it hasn't sold close to million copies in Japan!) Now it seems the Metal Gear Solid 4 40GB PS3 bundle's price is getting slashed at Akihabara retailer Gamers. (No clue about the gajillion other shops in Japan!) The price has been lowered from ¥49,800 (US$454) to ¥39,800 ($363) for a store sale - meaning that it's going for about what regular 40GB PS3s fetch without the game. That's right, Metal Gear Solid 4 for free.

Dragon Quest V Nintendo DS Case

Dengeki Online writes: "DQV Protect Case DS Lite", from July 17, Square Enix released by the RPG for the DS Dragon Quest V, the bride's original design, protected for the Nintendo DS Lite case. The game is fitted with a state operation and exchange software and volume control, power manipulation, each terminal are not possible. Polycarbonate material to a high degree of transparency adopted by the superior strength.

A Widescreen Nintendo DS is "Purely Rumor and Speculation"

Here's the deal. Yesterday an advertisement was floating around showing a Nintendo DS that had bigger, wider screens. They didn't look quite 16x9 as the gaming blogs were claiming, and the whole ordeal could have been a pretty quick Photoshop blunder by a third party software designer. Anyway, a lot of people ended up running the story, so I thought we should let you know about it in the remote case that a.) someone at work was talking about a widescreen DS or b.) it somehow ended up being real. Nintendo has called the device "purely rumor and speculation." I just think it's funny that the DS in the ad is out of battery. [aeropause and eurogamer via kotaku]

Update: Chrono Trigger DS Confirmed

That, my dear friends, is what we in the business like to call "Hope for the Future." In what was looking like it would be a huge slump for the DS, with all the Zeldas and Star Foxes and Advance Wars done and gone, it was looking like the DS was going to end up in a Yankees-like rebuilding year with everyone involved denying this was the case. But Square-Enix has dropped a proverbial bombshell on us with what appears to be a teaser site for a DS installment. Clearly, there isn't any sort of information regarding...anything. No screens, movies, info...or even actually saying that it is, indeed, Chrono Trigger (though the clock and the "CTDS" at the end of the URL suggest it). Expect some info to come up during E3. In the meantime, check out MyGamer for more updates as they come available.

2K Play's Carnival Games for Nintendo DS Now Available

2K Play today announced Carnival Games for Nintendo DS is now available at retailers throughout North America. Carnival Games for DS builds on the fun of the original by taking full advantage of the DS control mechanism. The title was inspired by Carnival Games, created originally for the Wii home video game system from Nintendo that has shipped over 1.5 million units worldwide, and was developed by Cat Daddy Games, 2K Play's wholly-owned studio that created the franchise. Here is more info:

Roogoo to land on Wii and Nintendo DS

SouthPeak Games announced yesterday that its critically acclaimed puzzle game Roogoo will release on the Wii and the Nintendo DS later this year. Roogoo, which was previously released on XBLA, features DS & Wii cross-compatibility, all-new levels and game modes that take advantage of the unique features of the motion-sensitive Wii Remote and Nintendo DS touch screen and stylus.

The iPhone is More Powerful Than the DS, But Sucks As a Controller

You know that the iPhone is powerful enough to render 3D games like Star Wars: The Force Unleashed, as well as various other ones we covered in the marathon review session, but just how powerful is it? How does it compare to actual gaming handhelds like the Nintendo DS and PSP? An EA developer put it this way. On a scale of the three, it's in between the DS and the PSP, but sliding more towards the PSP. That's right. In terms of power, you can expect to see games that look at least as good as the DS once developers get enough (read: more than four months) development time with it.

Pokemon DS Lite Hits US, Only Slightly Embarrassing to Own

The limited-edition Pokemon DS Lite was actually released in Japan back in 2006, but is just now showing up in a Gamestop ad in the US. The flashy, surprisingly mature paintjob features Dialga and Palkia, the two Pokemon—Pokemons? Pokemen?—from the Diamond and Pearl covers. It looks to come with a nice bundle, including carrying case, Pokemon Mystery Dungeon DVD "special," a poster of Grovyle and a Pokemon t-shirt. I prefer the even artier Honeybee DS Lite, but if you're dying for some Poke-branding this side of the Pacific, you could do worse than pick this up for the standard $130. [GoNintendo]

Two-headed turtle stolen in NY

This is actually a different two-headed turtle. I'm just impressed we already had a picture of a two-headed turtle in our image archive.

Widescreen DS console spied

A special E3 edition of Nintendo Power magazine includes what appears to be a snapshot of a widescreen DS handheld, featured in an advert for Disgaea DS and Rhapsody: A Musical Adventure.

Boss Buster Guide for Metal Gear Solid 4

The bosses of Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots are tough to beat, even for the most accomplished gamer. As if the roster of freaks in all the previous games wasn't ridiculous enough, you now have to deal with crazy mechanized babe machines, a souped-up Metal Gear Ray, and an immortal vampiric freakshow. GamePro's going to give you some valuable intel on taking down the big baddies in MGS4, just in case you can't sneak your way out of a "Mission Failed" scenario.
