First details have emerged on Lord of the Rings: Conquest which is being developed by Mercenaries crew Pandemic.

Rings Detected Around Saturn's Moon Rhea

Saturn is known for the spectacular rings that circle the planet, and the Cassini spacecraft has been exploring Saturn’s rings, as well as its moons since 2004. And now Cassini has found evidence that there may be rings around one of Saturn’s moons, too: Rhea, the second largest moon in Saturn’s system. This is the first time rings may have been found around a moon. While no images yet have been taken of the rings (the picture here is an artist’s rendering) an extensive debris disk and at least one ring appear to have been detected by a suite of six instruments on Cassini specifically designed to study the atmospheres and particles around Saturn and its moons.

Hanson Robotics is showing off a pretty innovative, if rather scary, robot toy at the CeBIT trade show. Zeno is based on character technology from New Zealand's Massive Software, which also won an academy award for the software it developed for the Lord of the Rings movies.

Nano-rings Made of Double-Stranded DNA, With Little Gaps For New Molecules

What appear under an atomic force microscope to be tiny rings with little bits missing are actually nanoscopic rings made of double-stranded DNA with a little gap in the form of a short single-stranded fragment. As Michael Famulok and his team from the University of Bonn, Germany, explain in the journal Angewandte Chemie , this gap is a place to attach other molecules that have the potential to transform the rings into versatile nanocomposites for various applications.

Robot Chicken: Star Wars Delayed

Originally slated for this month, Warner Home Video’s DVD release of the special Star Wars episode Adult Swim’s animated series Robot Chicken has been pushed back to coincide with various Lucasfilm activities. Interview: Connect 08: Jeffrey Steefel (Turbine)

Jeffrey Steefel, Turbine's producer of Lord of the Rings Online, was apparently an actor in a previous life, and so it was with the "Scottish Play" nowhere near our lips that we sat down for a few words on Turbine, Lord of the Rings Online, and the MMO genre in general.

Rings Discovered Around a Moon for the First Time

Riding with Robots writes "It turns out that one of the Ringed Planet's moons has rings of its own. The robotic spacecraft Cassini at Saturn has discovered that the icy moon Rhea is orbited by an extensive debris field and at least one ring, the first such system found. 'Many years ago we thought Saturn was the only planet with rings,' said one mission scientist. 'Now we may have a moon of Saturn that is a miniature version of its even more elaborately decorated parent.'"

Cassini Data Suggests Rocky Rings Around Saturn Moon

Unlike the rings around Saturn, Jupiter, Uranus and Neptune, the apparent arcs around Rhea remain invisible and have not been directly seen. Scientists inferred their existence based on measurements by the spacecraft Cassini, which detected a drop in electrons on both sides of the moon, suggesting the presence of rings was absorbing the electrons.

Saturn moon's rings puzzle astronomers

Telltale drops in electron flow measured by the Cassini spacecraft around Rhea point to the presence of rings of debris ranging from pebble to boulder size (Science, vol 319, p 1380). Rings made of such large particles are harder to spot than those made of fine dust.

And Nine Red Hats Were Gifted To The Race Of Men...

OK, what's the most sad case thing about me? A)That I can't escape making "Lord of The Rings" and "Star Wars" references to computing all the time, or B)That I am so unbelieveably excited about Red Hat 9.0 comming out in a few weeks!!!

A few years back a California court told a copyright holder to "get a life," pointing out that parodying his song "Beautiful Woman" was legitimate fair use. It''s depressing to see how some authors obsess over their creations that way, like a neurotic mother not allowing her child to go out and play. Once written, a book has the right to find its own place in the world, standing up to criticism and examination. We can only hope that this NY court does Rowlings a favor. If a reference work by genuine HP fans gives her these fits of illogic, what''s she going to do when undeniably legal parodies hit the market? Bored of the Rings, written, so it claimed, in a drunken stupor, did that with Lord of the Rings. There''s no doubt that HP parodies are on the way, and some of them will be crude and tasteless.
