Saturn is known for the spectacular rings that circle the planet, and the Cassini spacecraft has been exploring Saturn’s rings, as well as its moons since 2004. And now Cassini has found evidence that there may be rings around one of Saturn’s moons, too: Rhea, the second largest moon in Saturn’s system. This is the first time rings may have been found around a moon. While no images yet have been taken of the rings (the picture here is an artist’s rendering) an extensive debris disk and at least one ring appear to have been detected by a suite of six instruments on Cassini specifically designed to study the atmospheres and particles around Saturn and its moons.

What appear under an atomic force microscope to be tiny rings with little bits missing are actually nanoscopic rings made of double-stranded DNA with a little gap in the form of a short single-stranded fragment. As Michael Famulok and his team from the University of Bonn, Germany, explain in the journal Angewandte Chemie , this gap is a place to attach other molecules that have the potential to transform the rings into versatile nanocomposites for various applications.

Riding with Robots writes "It turns out that one of the Ringed Planet's moons has rings of its own. The robotic spacecraft Cassini at Saturn has discovered that the icy moon Rhea is orbited by an extensive debris field and at least one ring, the first such system found. 'Many years ago we thought Saturn was the only planet with rings,' said one mission scientist. 'Now we may have a moon of Saturn that is a miniature version of its even more elaborately decorated parent.'"

Unlike the rings around Saturn, Jupiter, Uranus and Neptune, the apparent arcs around Rhea remain invisible and have not been directly seen. Scientists inferred their existence based on measurements by the spacecraft Cassini, which detected a drop in electrons on both sides of the moon, suggesting the presence of rings was absorbing the electrons.

A few years back a California court told a copyright holder to "get a life," pointing out that parodying his song "Beautiful Woman" was legitimate fair use. It''s depressing to see how some authors obsess over their creations that way, like a neurotic mother not allowing her child to go out and play. Once written, a book has the right to find its own place in the world, standing up to criticism and examination. We can only hope that this NY court does Rowlings a favor. If a reference work by genuine HP fans gives her these fits of illogic, what''s she going to do when undeniably legal parodies hit the market? Bored of the Rings, written, so it claimed, in a drunken stupor, did that with Lord of the Rings. There''s no doubt that HP parodies are on the way, and some of them will be crude and tasteless.
