Reports surfaced earlier today saying that PS3 owners were not able to join online matches. Since I own a 60GB launch PS3, I had a friend bring his PS3 copy by and try it out. We had little luck connecting to any game type today. My Xbox 360 copy isn’t here yet but it supposedly has no multiplayer connectivity issues. How about the rest of you PS3 owners? How’s your luck with getting online with GTA IV?

Sony has announced the details on the next PS3 firmware update--version 2.30, coming mid-April--and the big news for home theater fans is that the PS3 is getting onboard DTS-HD High Resolution and DTS-HD Master Audio decoding for Blu-ray movies. Home theater fans have long lamented that the PS3 could not decode the new DTS soundtracks at their highest resolution, especially since movie studios like Fox have opted for DTS-HD Master Audio on many Blu-ray releases. Without getting too technical, DTS-HD Master Audio offers 7-channels of lossless audio at 96K sampling frequency and 24-bit depths--which means that the sound sent to your receiver should be identical to the studio master.

Benjamin Heckendorn is at it again, but this time, he is over on the Sony Side. Mr. Heckendorn has created a PS3 laptop at the request of Engadget, for them to auction off. Some of the features of this laptop are that it's a 60 gig PS3 model that has backwards compatibility, it is 720p, 17" HDTV with HDMI connection (which is the same as the last Xbox 360 laptop), it has a built-in keyboard & stereo audio amplifier, and it is 16 lbs and is thinner than a normal PS3 (17"x13.75"x"). It is really, truly awesome!

If you cast your minds back just a couple of weeks, you may remember that those lucky guys over at Engadget got a shiny new PS3 Laptop to auction off for charity courtesy of uber modder Benjamin Heckendorn (Ben Heck for short). Well now we will get to see all the work that went into producing the completed project, with part 1 kicking off by stripping down the Sony console and carfeully making notes and observations about all of the parts that go together to make the thing tick. It is obvious that the whole process takes some dedication from the very outset, which makes it very unlike all those electronic bit and bobs you pulled apart as a kid and then mysteriously (ok, not so mysteriously) never worked again when you tried to rebuild them. Part 2 promises the steps involved in re-arranging the parts of the PS3 so that it will fit in a la

PlayStation 3 owners rejoice! Today, Sony announced that the next system-software update for the PS3 (version 2.30), scheduled for release next week, will add the ability to decode DTS-HD Master Audio and High Resolution in their entirety. Up to now, the PS3 has only been able to extract the "core" DTS data from these formats, eliminating the benefit offered by their higher resolution.

The PlayStation 3 is the first Blu-ray player to support BD-Live functionality, thanks to a firmware update available today. Officially announced just last week, the update (version 2.20) was released right on schedule, and is now available as a free download to PS3 owners directly through the console's onscreen interface. Once installed, it allows the PS3's to access Internet-connected BD-Live content available on some discs. The list of compatible discs is currently minimal--just War and Saw IV available now, plus The Sixth Day and Walk Hard following on April 8--and the first round of BD-Live content doesn't seem to be very diverting. But as the list of supporting titles grows--and, ideally, the BD-Live content becomes more compelling--look for players that don't support Profile 2.

One item PS3 critics have been in universal agreement about is the user interface for the Playstation Store: it was clearly designed as a 3-foot UI for users with a mouse. Fortunately Sony is taking steps to address this with the next PS3 firmware update, version 2.30. The new interface is no longer web-driven, sporting a new menu system with 8 main categories. The Playstation store also features a new preview system, so you no longer have to leave the store to watch videos and screenshots.
