A few weeks ago we reported on "Nathaniel", an owner of a signed Xbox 360 console that was decorated with Halo artwork and signed by members of the game's developer Bungie. His console got "cleaned" of all the artwork and signatures by a Microsoft service person when the console had to go back to be fixed for a "Red Ring of Death" issue. Last time we stated that Bungie decided to send him a boatload of Halo merchandice as compensation; now the blog site Hawky McBloggy reports that "Nathaniel" got a new Xbox 360 console fron Microsoft that not only has artwork and signatures from the Xbox 360 community team and Bungie but also a Xbox 360 faceplate with a signature from Microsoft founder Bill Gates himself, along with a signed picture of Gates and some new Xbox 360 games among others.

At the Institute for Systems Biology in Seattle, Bill Gates gave his thoughts on where the pharmaceutical industry was going, and where it should be going. However, he also slipped up a bit and criticized the GNU General Public License (GPL). The GPL is a widely used (including by the Linux kernel) free software license. Wired's Thomas Goetz took notes on Bill Gates' response to a question from the audience regarding whether Gates thought Microsoft should use open source software in health research:

theodp writes "PC World reports that DHS has extended the time foreign graduates of US colleges can stay in the country and work to almost two-and-a-half years, an 'emergency' change that drew kudos from Microsoft and other H-1B visa stakeholders. Somebody told me just the other day (it was Bryan Ferry) that Bill Gates was a gerbil. This was quite upsetting as I have a sneaking affection for gerbils. And Bill Gates, who with his wife Melissa has given squillions of dollars to the poor through their eponymous Foundation, is a thoroughly decent chap. Gates is a 21st century hero whose little legs run the wheel of the information economy, if that’s not stretching the gerbil metaphor, or indeed the little legs of Bill Gates, too far.

Pickens brings news that researchers from Rice University have discovered that it's possible to store hydrogen inside buckyballs. Hydrogen can be an excellent power source, but it is notoriously difficult to store. The buckyballs can contain up to 8% of their weight in hydrogen, and they are strong enough to hold it at a density that rivals the center of Jupiter. "Using a computer model, Yakobson's research team has tracked the strength of each atomic bond in a buckyball and simulated what happened to the bonds as more hydrogen atoms were packed inside. Yakobson said the model promises to be particularly useful because it is scalable, that is it can calculate exactly how much hydrogen a buckyball of any given size can hold, and it can also tell scientists how overstuffed buckyballs burst open and release their cargo.
