We recently mentioned an event at the Parsons New School for Design and Technology in which students were divided into teams, given copies of LittleBigPlanet, and had 24 hours to develop levels for the game. GameSetWatch has the story of how the design contest went, what the winners and other notable finishers designed, and how the judges were surprised that "what they played could be completed in 24 hours." Further coverage is available at GameSpot, including a videos of several different levels. "Team Good Sportsmanship's level consisted of a single massive moving monster. SackBoy had to find his way up the monster, go through its digestive track while dodging stomach acid and eventually get on top of its head. The level featured an anatomical tour of the beast, complete with rib cage, beating heart even a dangling uvula.

Celebrating the release of GNOME 2.24! ====================================== Today, the GNOME Project celebrates the release of GNOME 2.24, the latest version of the popular, multi-platform free desktop environment and of its developer platform. Released on schedule, to the day, GNOME 2.24 builds on top of a long series of successful six months releases to offer the best experience to users and developers. For more than 10 years now, the project has been seeing a tremendous amount of work. And as usual, it's hard to come back to a previous version of GNOME once you've tried GNOME 2.24, which is probably the best compliment the project can receive. This six months effort wouldn't have been possible without the whole GNOME community, made of contributors from all around the world: hackers, documentors

The folks at Medialets have put together a number-crunching comparison of the iPhone App Store and the Android Marketplace after the first 24 hours. There is nothing really Earth-shattering in the data, but it does provide some insight into the similarities between iPhone and G1 users. Basically, it illustrates that both parties are interested in the same sorts of apps, given the fact that the distributions are fairly similar. One could draw the conclusion that Android users are more into lifestyle and productivity-based functionality, but without detailed information comparing the number of these apps released by both platforms at launch, this assessment is probably a bit premature. "Fifty hours of sunshine in England without snow or torrential rain will never happen." So said one of the cricketers from Brisbane who set a record for endurance, playing 50 hours of continuous cricket, back in March, after his team eclipsed the earlier best of 35 hours, set in England. Six months later - now, that is - the Blunham Cricket Club has pushed the mark to 59 hours and 35 minutes. Blunham were not exactly restoring English pride by beating the Aussies: the record they broke, 55 hours, had been set in Auckland.

FastMac has unveiled their second generation iV battery pack for the iPhone 3G, and it promises to deliver up to 24 hours of talk time, 750 hours (31 days) of standby, 20+ hours of video and almost 72 hours of audio playback time. Depending on your settings, we are talking triple or even quadruple the available power here. It looks a little bulkier than Mophie's Juice Pack, but the extra battery life and added touches like a built-in LED flash/flashlight and a second USB port to charge additional gadgets definitely makes it the more attractive option on paper (a hands-on will be coming up shortly to put this to the test). Plus, it is priced less than the Juice Pack at $80.

We gave 150 students, split into 19 teams, a PS3 with a copy of LittleBigPlanet, a truck-load of pizzas, an industrial sized vat of Red Bull and 24 hours to create whatever they liked using the game. One thousand bucks was up for grabs for the winning team, with five runners up prizes of $500."

Sitti, the “First Lady of Philippine Bossa Nova,” as director Calvin Neria put it, has retired from her hosting duties in Wowowee. This in lieu of her upcoming birthday concert at the Captain’s Bar, Mandarin Oriental, Manila, on Nov. 29. She said Wowowee was too strenuous for her, especially to her voice. The first day she was just talking, but two days after that, she was already shouting as loudly as Valerie Concepcion. She says she prefers hosting to acting. Hosting takes five hours at the most, but taping requires her to be on the set for a whopping 24 hours. She loves singing the most, since she is usally done after two hours. The three-part concert will trace Sitti’s lounge bar roots, walk through her bossa nova present, and look into her pop jazz future.

Joystiq's Law of the Game column uses the recently released LittleBigPlanet to address the question of intellectual property rights for user-created content within and for games. At this point, Sony's ToS claims a great deal of control over users' work, unlike Second Life's, which is much more permissive. GiantBomb has a related story pointing out creations within LittleBigPlanet that are copies of other games, and how they could lead to legal troubles for Sony if they aren't quick about taking them down.
