Yahoo, a major prize for Goliaths such as Google and Microsoft that wants to build a web empire with a major audience, sizable revenues, and good brand. By making a deal to Yahoo, Google gets a vastly bigger audience to go with its formidable resources. Google won’t be able to bid for Yahoo because of antitrust concerns. Yahoo has already surrendered some of its advertising space to search leader Google. The deal will allows running Google ads on yahoo search result pages. Google ad partnership with Yahoo could boost revenue and extend its online reach, making it the sole master of online advertising. Does Google deserve Yahoo? Google ad partnership with Yahoo would keep Yahoo out of Microsoft sight. Yahoo so desperate to stay away from Microsoft.

The launch, part of the planned expansion of the Rhapsody service across Yahoo!, represents the continuation of Yahoo! Yahoo! Glue Visually Organizes Search Results

You might not realize this, but Yahoo quietly launched a new way to provide search results last night. This new paradigm is called Yahoo! Glue, is currently in beta in the U.S., and is based on a similar program Yahoo! has already been experimenting with in India for the last few months. If you perform a search on Yahoo! you are not going to see anything different--Yahoo! Glue currently resides on its own standalone site at glue.yahoo.com, and you'll need to perform searches specifically from Yahoo! Glue if you want to see the new search results selections and layout.

Yahoo Interested In a Microsoft Buyout, But Microsoft Isn't

Linux Blog writes "The Google-Yahoo advertising deal has been rejected by the Department of Justice, and Google has pulled the plug on a search-ad partnership with Yahoo that would have given Yahoo major new revenue, but that raised antitrust concerns. Now, Yahoo has said the 'For Sale' sign is still on its front lawn and that Microsoft should buy the company. The internet portal's co-founder and CEO Jerry Yang made this comment despite the fact Yahoo rejected a $33 a share offer from Microsoft back in May. What a huge loss for the share holders. Microsoft was quick to respond that their buyout efforts were a thing of the past, but left the door open to a search partnership."

Yahoo! starts search for new CEO

Yahoo! CEO Jerry Yang is stepping aside, and the internet company has started a search for a new CEO. Yang, co-founder of Yahoo!, has decided to return to his former role as Chief Yahoo! upon the appointment of his successor. He will also continue to serve on the board. Yang, 40, assumed the CEO role at the board's request in June 2007, and he has led Yahoo! through a number of strategy changes and its merger talks with Microsoft. Chairman Roy Bostock, working with the independent directors and in consultation with Yang, is leading the process of assessing potential candidates for the CEO position. The search will encompass both internal and external candidates, and the board has retained Heidrick & Struggles, an international executive search firm, to assist in the process.

Bloggers getting bigger and messier

Blog front pages are now large pages of images and scripts rather than the pared-down text pages of old. The average-sized front page is 934KB and 35 per cent are over 1MB, according to researchers who looked at Technorati's top 100 blogs. Images were the main contributor to front page size - making up 61.3 per cent of total size, next were scripts with 17.2 per cent. Scripts are typically add-on functions to blogs like those which record visitor numbers. The average number of script files on a front page was nine.

tdalek writes "You may remember the recent Slashdot article about Yahoo! Zimbra Desktop exposing authentication information. It turns out that more Yahoo! applications are affected, although to a lesser degree. With Yahoo!'s desktop program, it transmitted the usernames and passwords in plaintext. Yahoo! is one of the lucky few default e-mail providers on the iPhone; sadly it looks like Apple didn't insist on encryption from Yahoo! On the iPhone, authentication is encrypted, but you can see all the messages sent and received in plaintext. Incoming messages are downloaded in plaintext over the standard imap port. Outgoing mail is a bit harder to find, it is apparently sent by an HTTP post request wrapped up inside a bundle of XML, but security through obscurity isn't very effective.

T-Mobile USA Picks Yahoo For Search

It’s not all bad news for Yahoo (NSDQ: YHOO) these days. T-Mobile USA has picked the company’s OneSearch platform for its default search engine on mobile phones, InfoWorld reports. The carrier will be placing a OneSearch button on phones under a deal expected to be announced at the Open Mobile Summit in San Francisco later this week. It’s a notable win for Yahoo, particularly considering that T-Mobile just released the first Google-branded phone, the G1, last month. Yahoo didn’t say whether the OneSearch button would get any play on that device. Marco Boerries, EVP and head of Yahoo’s Connected Life Division, told InfoWorld that Yahoo let Google take away most of its market share in PC search and that it’s working diligently to make sure the same thing doesn’t happen in mobile.

Yahoo Adds eBay Anywhere to Home Page

Yahoo added a new application that allows users to add the eBay Anywhere application to their customized home pages. Yahoo said the inclusion of the eBay app demonstrates how its opening its homepage to third-parties to make users' life simpler. The eBay widget will let users quickly monitor their eBay buying and selling activities, including checking recent bids or getting reminders about auctions that are about to close. They can also as search for and find new eBay items right from within Yahoo.com.
