I, like my colleagues Rob Hof and David Kiley, actually like the new Microsoft ads featuring Jerry Seinfeld and Bill Gates. They humanize the company—and certainly Gates—in a nice way. Microsoft senior veep Bill Veghte says the spots have been hugely successful as a “conversation starter,” drawing 550 unique impressions.

As quickly as it began, Microsoft's fling with comedian Jerry Seinfeld has come to an end. In a development first reported by Valleywag, Microsoft announced today that the Bill & Jerry "teaser ads" that launched two weeks ago were always meant to be short-lived, and that they would give way to a new series of ads starting tonight. In short, Microsoft has disposed of Seinfeld's toothbrush in the bathroom and replaced it with a shiny new one.

I even unknowingly shared an elevator with him at one time on his way up to the office." The article notes that the name "bgC3" derives from Bill Gates, catalyst, and the "third thing," neither Microsoft or the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. "Just months after his Microsoft farewell, Bill Gates is quietly creating a new company — complete with high-tech office space, a cryptic name and even its own trademark. Public documents describe the new Gates entity — bgC3 LLC — as a 'think tank.' It's housed within a Kirkland office that the Microsoft co-founder established on his own after leaving his day-to-day executive role at the company this summer.

Oh man, are these ads awesome. No ads really become outdated faster than ads for video game systems, with their quickly-antiquated technology, ridiculous music and hilarious editing. And boy, was Sega aggressive: "If you're not playing these games, you're a giant loser!" That may have been so, but unfortunately for Sega, there were way more Giant Losers than Cool Kids. As corny as it looks now, it's the same in-your-face style used today, where the marketplace is strangely similar to the early '90s, with warm fuzzy Nintendo in the dominant position, and more edgy aggressors trying to steal market share. Will we laugh as hard at today's commercials as we do to the following Sega ads of yesteryear?

If you hadn’t noticed, Apple’s “I’m a Mac” ads have been strangely absent from TV of late. During the baseball playoffs, I noticed only iPhone ads. I know the folks at Microsoft have noticed this as well, and have wondered whether it has anything to do with their new “I’m a PC” ads. After all, the Apple ads seemed to get scarce soon after Microsoft’s campaign launched.

Colin Colehour in the forum spotted a couple of image ads in Google image search. In previous times image search was ad-free, but Google had already announced they’re experimenting with ads there. I can’t reproduce these here from Germany, but Colin saw the following light-yellow box titled “Sponsored Links” in a search for canon camera:

Even with the first Android device set to launch in a matter of days, Google (NSDQ: GOOG) still has the iPhone and the inherent opportunities it presents high on its mind. The company has been meeting with ad agencies recently to show off different ways to integrate advertising into searches conducted on the phone, AdWeek reports. Google is working to give advertisers the ability to integrate iPhone ad groups into their regular search campaign. The idea is to give ad agencies an opportunity to create iPhone-specific ads that might draw in more interest than ads simply repurposed from online ads created primarily for PCs. For example, companies could place ads that wold allow users to click to call. Reuters reports that YouTube will be partnering with Amazon and iTunes to provide the ability to purchase games and songs that are in or related to YouTube's hosted videos. For example, watching footage from Spore will bring up a link to purchase the actual game through Amazon. The sales revenue will be shared. In related news, Google has launched a public beta for their in-game advertising software based on Adsense. "Google is initially targeting the sweet spot for its technology: games based in Adobe's Flash platform and which run in a web browser with no download. ... Microsoft Corp. has announced the general availability of Microsoft Robotics Developer Studio 2008 (Microsoft RDS), the newest version of its robotics programming platform. Microsoft RDS includes a simple programming model to support building asynchronous applications, a set of visual authoring and simulation tools to aid in application development, and tutorials and sample code to help developers get started. Microsoft (MSFT) has released the latest set of data for its controversial Live Search Cashback program, which offers users monetary incentives to click through and buy goods from the ads they’re shown. The results? Things seem to be looking good from a ROI perspective, as users are responding to the ads more than they typically do on other search engines (though this isn’t very surprising, as they are being offered money). More significant is the fact that Microsoft’s share of ad dollars has risen significantly, especially in proportion to its relatively weak market share (which has largely languished, despite the new program).

Miguel de Icaza caught and criticized Microsoft for doing this with its Microsoft Extensibility Framework (MEF), licensing it under the Microsoft Limited Permissive License (Ms-LPL), which restricts use of the code to Windows. Microsoft has changed the license for MEF to an OSI-approved license, the Microsoft Public License, but it continues to host a range of other projects under the Ms-LPL. If CodePlex wasn't an 'open source project hosting site,' this wouldn't be a problem. But when Microsoft invokes the 'open source' label, it has a duty to live up to associated expectations and ensure that the code it releases on CodePlex is actually open source.
