Microsoft has already taken Silverlight to version 2, but only for Windows and Mac OS X platforms. When it comes to the Linux operating system, Silverlight compatibility is not Microsoft’s responsibility, as the project was adopted by Novell. And, while on Windows and Mac OS Silverlight is at version 2, with v3 promised for 2009, on Linux development moves at a slower pace. However, the first Beta of Moonlight (as the open source implementation of Silverlight is labeled) is just around the corner.

Silverlight 2 Beta 1 arrived in March, laying the foundation for a massive update to Silverlight 1. Silverlight 2 Beta 2 was then released in June, and while many expected the final version late this summer, Microsoft instead sent out a slightly newer build in July. CWmike writes to tell us that with the impending release of their Silverlight 2.0 product, Microsoft is poised to enact the next phase of their plan, wooing developers and designers directly. Microsoft is funding a French open-source project designed to allow programmers to utilize the Eclipse framework to build Silverlight apps. "Microsoft is also releasing for free a set of programming templates called the Silverlight Control Pack under its Microsoft Permissive License, as well as the technical specification for Silverlight's Extensible Application Markup Language (XAML) vocabulary via Microsoft's Open Specification Promise. The latter, said Goldfarb, should make it easier for would-be Silverlight developers."

Silverlight has been in the news since it was announced last year. In fact, Silverlight began as what was known as WPF/E (Windows Presentation Foundation/Everywhere). When Microsoft introduced WPF for the desktop and deployment through Clickonce, it felt that it had to enter the RIA (Rich Internet Applications) market that was dominated by Flash. Because Silverlight is built on WPF and uses XAML as the declarative language for building the pages, however, there are certain differences between using WPF and Silverlight.

Amazingly, that milestone has now been achieved. Sine Nomine Associates is making its first release of OpenSolaris for System z available for free and public download. Source code is also available. OpenSolaris for System z requires a System z9 or z10 mainframe and z/VM, the hypervisor that's nearly universal to mainframe Linux installations.
