"In February I wrote a post called 'Will There Be A (Successful) iPhone-Only Social Network?' and presented an argument that the iPhone SDK presented a compelling opportunity to launch a mobile social network while avoiding the chicken and egg problem that any new network, and particularly a mobile network, would encounter. iPhone penetration in Silicon Valley, and among early adopters, is so high that the application could spread virally among those communities. As the network gains traction, it could expand to Google’s Android platform and grow from there," Michael Arrington reports for TechCrunch.

Google doesn't operate a network, if uses others. They take this attitude like all people who want a free ride. Verizon has a valid need to test an application on it's network before letting it on it. What if a new application causes network problems for Verizon's network and their Customers on that network. Will Google make Verizon whole if they lose business because of a snafu is loosed on their network by some rouge application. Give me a break. Will Google allow me to put applications on their servers without and testing> I doubt it would. I would put up such a fuss about their right to control their network, etc. Get a real life Google.

myspace-music1.jpgMySpace has just announced a high-profile move into the digital music retailing space, to compete head-on with Apple’s iTunes. It’s called MySpace Music, and is a joint venture with major labels Sony BMG, Universal Music Group and Warner Music Group. They’re describing it as a “fully integrated 360 degree global music solution”. Whatever that is.No, I’ll tell you what it is. It goes beyond MySpace’s existing music features - streaming tracks on bands’ profiles - and is basically a platform for artists and labels to sell music and other content on the MySpace Music site, on band profiles, and through regular MySpace users’ profiles too. It includes DRM-free song downloads (so they’ll work on your phone), but also a mobile storefront run by Jamba, which like MySpace is owned by News Corporation.

coondoggie alerts us to a story that is actually a few weeks old now about a network of sonic buoys to listen to right whales, in order to warn ships away from them. On April 10, 22% of the known population of right whales in the world — 79 out of 350 — were gathered at Stellwagen Bank, off of Massachusetts, to feed on a bumper crop of the tiny crustaceans called copepods. The network of smart buoys helps to protect the whales from the roughly 1,500 ships per year that go through this feeding ground on their way to and from Boston.

Canada's current social security system has been developed to address the post-war challenge of reconstructing a full-employment economy. Increasingly, social policy experts and government decision-makers reflect on the current system and ask if fundamental changes are needed to meet the challenges and stresses emerging in the 21st century. Former CPRN Senior Research Fellow Cynthia Williams explores this theme in Asset-building Approaches and the Search for a New Social Policy Architecture in Canada, published by Social and Enterprise Development Innovations (SEDI) in its book, Wealth and Well-Being / Ownership and Opportunity: New Directions in Social Policy for Canada.

The open source model is a form of software development with source code that is typically made available to all interested parties. At the core of this process is a decentralized production process: open source software development is done by a network of unpaid software developers. Using data from Sourceforge.net, the largest repository of Open Source Software (OSS) projects and contributors on the Internet, we construct two related networks: A Project network and a Contributor network. Knowledge spillovers may be closely related to the structure of such networks, since contributors who work on several projects likely exchange information and knowledge. Defining the number of downloads as output we finds that (i) additional contributors are associated with an increase in output, but that additional contributors to projects in the giant
