MySpace Lets Users Share Profile Data on Yahoo, Twitter, eBay

Los Angeles - News Corp.'s (NYSE: NWS) MySpace has announced the launch of a new "Data Availability" initiative, which will allow users to share their public profile data on third-party websites of their choosing, including Yahoo (NASD: YHOO), eBay, Photobucket and Twitter. The idea is to eliminate the need to update personal information across many websites, and instead use MySpace for updating, to include basic profile information, friend networks, photos, blog posts and videos.

Los Angeles-based MySpace said Thursday morning that it has launched a new initiative to allow Yahoo, eBay, Photobucket, and Twitter to pull public profile data into their websites. MySpace said its "Data Availability" effort will allow users to dynamically share their public profile information with other sites. MySpace will allow users to control what information they share with who, including basic profile information, photos, videos, and friends. The initial links will show up in Yahoo's Instant Messenger application, eBay's profiles, MySpace's own Photobucket subsidiary, and also to provide better profile information to the popular Twitter instant messaging application.

The group recommends that search engines only be allowed to hold onto search data for six months. 'To hang onto data for longer, search engine operators will need to show that such data is "strictly necessary" to offer the service. Google and others have long said that they need to retain data in order to refine search results, prevent click fraud, and launch new services like spell check (which, in Google's case, was built from user search data). In addition, the data that is kept will need to be guarded more closely. The working group concluded that IP addresses could be used to identify individuals; if not by the search engine itself, then by law enforcement or after a subpoena.
