Amazon.com Announces First Quarter 2008 Earnings

Amazon.com Inc. announced financial results for its first quarter ended March 31, 2008. Net sales increased 37% to $4.13 billion in the first quarter, compared with $3.02 billion in first quarter 2007. Excluding the $0.18 billion favorable impact from year-over-year changes in foreign exchange rates throughout the quarter, net sales grew 31% compared with first quarter 2007. Net income increased 30% to $143 million in the first quarter, compared with net income of $111 million in first quarter 2007.

The company expects first-quarter earnings of 32 cents to 33 cents a share, with comparable-store sales growth of 24% to 25%. GameStop projects 2008 earnings of $2.25 to $2.34 a share, with total sales rising 19% to 21% and comparable-store sales growing 10% to 12%.

This time, however, it’s not outraged parents doing the scrutinizing. It’s lawmakers. Decline in U.K. auction listings sparks selloff in eBay shares

Shares of eBay Inc. fell as much as 4% after the company saw a sharp decline in new auction listings in Britain, its third-largest market, Deutsche Bank said in a research note yesterday. Deutsche Bank analyst Jeetil Patel, who advises investors sell off eBay holdings, said weekly data for the the third week of April showed U.K. auction listings dropping 9% from a week before. The listing of U.K. merchandise was down 19% from a year ago. Shares of eBay fell 3.4%, or US$1.08, to US$30.63 in Nasdaq trading yesterday. McAfee sales top estimates

McAfee, the second-biggest maker of security software, reported first-quarter revenue that topped estimates after hiring more sales representatives to win customers. Sales gained 17 percent to $369.6 million, beating the $351.6 million average estimate of 20 analysts surveyed by Bloomberg. Net income declined 27 percent to $31.6 million, or 19 cents a share, from $43.4 million, or 27 cents, a year earlier, said Santa Clara-based McAfee in a statement Thursday. The company hired more salespeople and increased incentives, Chief Executive Officer Dave DeWalt said today in a conference call. Revenue from corporate customers climbed 16 percent, while consumer sales rose 19 percent. International sales accounted for 49 percent of revenue, the company said.
