Cisco profit beats subdued expectations

Cisco Systems Inc.'s profit fell 5 percent in its fiscal third quarter but beat Wall Street's expectations, a sign the turbulent U.S. economy didn't rattle the world's largest networking equipment maker as hard as expected.

Since then, two lawyers from the notoriously patent-friendly Eastern District of Texas have filed defamation suits against Frenkel and Cisco, and Frenkel's blog has been shuttered. One of the plaintiffs, a renowned patent judge's son, may have been hunting the anonymous blogger for months. This week Cisco announced new blogging guidelines in response to the Troll Tracker fiasco. The company acknowledged that 'a few Cisco employees used poor judgment' during secret-blog-time, but they're largely standing by their man. Cisco's new rules will prohibit only anonymous blogging by employees about issues for which 'they have responsibilities at Cisco.

Nintendo profit jumps, offers moderate outlook

Japan's Nintendo Co. Ltd., maker of the hit Wii game console, said yesterday fourth-quarter profit jumped 60 per cent, but it forecast modest annual growth of 9 per cent as it expects sales of its DS handheld machine to slow. Starting with the DS, and then the Wii, Nintendo has more than doubled its operating profit for two years running. Operating profit for the January-March quarter surged to ¥93.2-billion ($900-million), beating a Reuters Estimates consensus of ¥82-billion from 19 analysts. But Nintendo expects operating profit to climb to ¥530-billion this business year, 6 per cent below the average analyst estimate of ¥566.5-billion. Nintendo forecast profit to grow 26 per cent to ¥325-billion on a sharp fall in currency appraisal losses.

eBay: Expectations Rising Heading Into Wednesday Earnings

Expectations are rising for eBay’s (EBAY) Q1 results heading into its announcement after the close on Wednesday. This morning, a number of analysts weighed in on their expectations for the quarter, with most anticipating a strong report. This trend has been building for several weeks; eBay shares have gained more than 22% since mid-March. Given rising expectations, you have to wonder if the stock can continue the rally unless the company really does blow away expectations.

symbolset writes "InternetNews is reporting that Cisco's new Application eXtension Platform turns several models of Cisco switches into Linux application servers. With certified libraries in C, Java and Perl, developers will be able to use a downloadable SDK to build their apps. The AXP server is just another module in a Cisco switch running Cisco's own derivation of a modern Linux distro (Kernel 2.6.x) specifically hardened to run on that particular hardware. Modules will include up to 1.4-GHz Intel Pentiums with 2 GB RAM and a 160 GB hard drive."

The company sees a second-quarter profit of 42 cents to 47 cents a share on revenue of $360 million to $375 million. Analysts expect 43 cents a share on revenue of $355.2 million. Separately, McAfee said it signed a multi-year worldwide partnership with computer maker Acer Inc. to provide McAfee Internet Security Suite with SiteAdvisor for Acer's consumer customers.
