BT to kick off fresh Phorm trial

Telecoms giant BT is about to start further trials of a controversial internet advertising technology.

BT Silences Customers Over Phorm

An anonymous reader writes "The Register reports that BT, the UK's dominant telecom and internet service provider, has 'banned all future discussion of Phorm and its "WebWise" targeted advertising product on its customer forums, and deleted all past threads about the controversy dating back to February.' Phorm is a controversial opt-out system for delivering targeted advertising that intercepts traffic passing through an ISP in order to profile subscribers via an assigned unique ID based on their online activities. Subscribers can opt-out at the Webwise website but are opted-in again if the Phorm cookie is cleared. Firefox users can install Melvin Sage's Firephorm add-on to manage their interaction with Phorm and Webwise."

A PlusNet customer has been invited to join a BT trial of behavioural ad-serving technology from Phorm.

BT to begin third Phorm trial

$100M DAPT trial supplants CODA: Massive DES/dual antiplatelet therapy trial announced at TCT

Washington, DC - In what observers are calling a first for device/drug-sponsored trials, eight companies have signed on to fund a $100-million, 20 000-patient drug-eluting stent (DES) trial now dubbed the Dual Antiplatelet Therapy Trial (DAPT). DAPT will look at whether 30 months of dual antiplatelet therapy is better than 12 months for preventing stent thrombosis and major adverse cardiovascular and cerebrovascular events (MACCE) and also whether the benefit of continued dual antiplatelet therapy relates to reducing stent thrombosis associated with drug-eluting stents or is primarily patient-oriented, relating to disease progression and nontarget lesions.

Pason Systems Inc. announces automatic driller patent infringemnt lawsuit ruling

CALGARY, Nov. 7 /CNW/ - Pason Systems Inc. ("Pason" or "the Company") today announced the trial court verdict in the patent infringement lawsuit regarding the Company's automatic driller in the United States. In 2004, the trial court refused to grant the requested injunction to prevent the Company from renting its automatic driller. In 2006, a Federal Appeals Court ruled that the trial court had misconstrued the language of one of the claims in the patent at issue and remanded the case to the trial court to hold a full trial on the merits of the claim of infringement and the Company's defences, including that the patent in question is invalid and that there is no infringement.

Orange Ditches Phorm, Sees UK Sales Dip Despite Mobile Internet Growth

Slow-burning behavioural ad targeting network Phorm has lost another likely client - Orange had been considering using the service on its UK ISP network, making money from the transfer of its users’ browsing data to advertisers, but has decided against it on privacy grounds. Orange’s online ads SVP Paul-François Fournier (via FT.com): “Privacy is in our DNA, so we need to be honest and clear about what we are doing. We have decided not to be in Phorm because of that. The way it was proposed, the privacy issue was too strong.” Guardian News & Media had earlier considered adopting Phorm, too, but backed down over fears the privacy aspect didn’t sit well with its brand image.

An anonymous reader writes "The French Senate has approved a three strikes law for Internet users who download copyrighted entertainment media without paying for it. If, after two warnings, a person continues to download pirated music and movies, the internet service providers would cut off access for a year. Quoting: 'The legislation passed with a massive cross-party majority of 297 votes to 15. Only a handful of conservatives, centrists and socialists voted against, while the Communists abstained.
