Inside Intel's Core i7 Processor, Nehalem

MojoKid writes "Intel's next-generation CPU microarchitecture, which was recently given the official processor family name of 'Core i7,' was one of the big topics of discussion at IDF. Intel claims that Nehalem represents its biggest platform architecture change to date. This might be true, but it is not a from-the-ground-up, completely new architecture either. Intel representatives disclosed that Nehalem 'shares a significant portion of the P6 gene pool,' does not include many new instructions, and has approximately the same length pipeline as Penryn. Nehalem is built upon Penryn, but with significant architectural changes (full webcast) to improve performance and power efficiency. Nehalem also brings Hyper-Threading back to Intel processors, and while Hyper-Threading has been criticized in the past as being energy inefficient, Intel cla

Intel Explains In What Year We'll Be Cyborgs But Terminators Will Kill Us Anyway

2050. That's the year that you'll plug your brain into a toaster. Intel doesn't know how, precisely, but according to Intel CTO Justin Rattner's recent keynote at the Intel Developer Forum, they're working on it. From Intel's summary of the event:

Intel Says to Prepare For "Thousands of Cores"

Impy the Impiuos Imp writes to tell us that in a recent statement Intel has revealed their plans for the future and it goes well beyond the traditional processor model. Suggesting developers start thinking about tens, hundreds, or even thousand or cores, it seems Intel is pushing for a massive evolution in the way processing is handled. "Now, however, Intel is increasingly 'discussing how to scale performance to core counts that we aren't yet shipping...Dozens, hundreds, and even thousands of cores are not unusual design points around which the conversations meander,' [Anwar Ghuloum, a principle engineer with Intel's Microprocessor Technology Lab] said. He says that the more radical programming path to tap into many processing cores 'presents the 'opportunity' for a major refactoring of their code base, including changes in languages, lib

Intel acquires UK-based Linux lab OpenedHand

UK Linux lab OpenedHand has been acquired by Intel. The OpenedHand team will become part of the Intel Open Source Technology Centre and will focus on development of the Moblin Software Platform, the optimised software stack for Intel Atom processors. Two Ex-RIAA Staffers Head Up ESA - Crackdown on gaming piracy expected

The Entertainment Software Association has traditionally been kinder to illegal filesharing than have other entertainment trade associations such as RIAA and MPAA. However, a former RIAA executive and an ex-RIAA lawyer are now in head positions at the ESA and that has some people wondering if there is going to be a RIAA-style crackdown on the illegal filesharing of computer games. Some believe that this could even lead to targeting people who get pirated copies of the game solely to get around DRM. There is additional concern that the gaming industry is not big enough to fight back against RIAA-like lawsuits if indeed the same methods used by RIAA were implemented by the ESA.

iPhone 3G vs. BlackBerry Bold: First Head to Head

There are basically two camps on the year's most anticipated phone: iPhone 3G or BlackBerry Bold. They are different phones with different core audiences, which largely comes down to keyboard preferences. But Boy Genius gives us a lot to chew on anyway in the first live head-to-head (and not just the photos). The shockers are that the newly plastic iPhone 3G has a better build quality and the Bold's screen is better, thanks to a dense pixel-per-inch ratio.

Intel Capital plans further acquisitions

World investment fund Intel Capital, which recently gained a minority stake in Internet Mall, the largest Czech group of e-shops, plans further investments in the Czech Republic, according to Marcin Hejka, the director of strategic investments for Central and Eastern Europe at Intel Capital. Chances are high that the firm will announce an interesting investment in the Czech Republic already this year, he said. The Central and East European region is clearly the best place where investors can place their money in the coming years, Hejka said. Intel Capital looks at 300 to 500 opportunities in the whole region every year, and a large part of them is from the Czech Republic, he told daily Hospodsk noviny.

Intel disappointed with Apple over iPhone chip choice...

Apple will not be incorporating Intel chips into its iPhone in the near future, according to Intel's digital enterprise group general manager Patrick Gelsinger in a discussion about the company's shrinking x86 platform. Forbes reveals that Gelsinger is disappointed that Apple "chose not to take that road map at their next generation platform," noting that Intel has a plan to take advantage of its x86 desktop architecture.

nerdyH writes with the news that Intel has acquired OpenedHand, the developer of 'Poky Linux' and Matchbox. "The UK-based embedded Linux services team will join the Intel Open Source Technology Center, and will focus on Moblin development for mobile Internet devices and other mobile devices." The article notes that Intel's Moblin initiative had "failed to generate much interest" among developers when first announced earlier this year; this acquisition might help it catch the attention of more Linux developers.

More info on the drives can be found in this article at CNET.
