MojoKid writes "AMD officially launched their triple-core processor offering today with the introduction of the Phenom X3 8750. When AMD first announced plans to introduce tri-core processors late last year, reaction to the news was mixed. Some felt that AMD was simply planning to pass off partially functional Phenom X4 quad-core processors as triple-core products, making lemonade from lemons if you will. Others thought it was a good way for AMD to increase bottom line profits, getting more usable die from a wafer and mitigating yield loss. This is an age-old strategy in the semiconductor space and after all, the graphics guys have been selling GPUs with non-functional units for years. This full performance review and evaluation of the new AMD Phenom X3 8750 Tri-Core processor shows the CPU scales well in a number of standard application

Pickens brings news that researchers from Rice University have discovered that it's possible to store hydrogen inside buckyballs. Hydrogen can be an excellent power source, but it is notoriously difficult to store. The buckyballs can contain up to 8% of their weight in hydrogen, and they are strong enough to hold it at a density that rivals the center of Jupiter. "Using a computer model, Yakobson's research team has tracked the strength of each atomic bond in a buckyball and simulated what happened to the bonds as more hydrogen atoms were packed inside. Yakobson said the model promises to be particularly useful because it is scalable, that is it can calculate exactly how much hydrogen a buckyball of any given size can hold, and it can also tell scientists how overstuffed buckyballs burst open and release their cargo.

AMD's Chief Technology Officer, Phil Hester, has resigned his post effective today, Friday, April 11th. According to AMD, Hester's position will not be replaced, instead his responsibilites will be distributed among business heads, such as Mario Rivas, who heads up the computing products group, and Rick Bergman, who runs the graphics group. Hester's decision to leave was a personal decision and is apparently unrelated to the layoffs AMD announced earlier this week. He joined AMD in 2005, prior to that Hester worked at IBM for 23 years.

ThinSkin writes "The combination of AMD's ATI graphics division and AMD's CPU division means that AMD often fights a two-front war, directly competing against Intel in the CPU business as well as Nvidia in graphics. AMD's Hybrid Graphics technology allows them to fight against both companies at the same time. Inserting an additional card works the same as CrossFire, which, like Nvidia's SLI, was only capable by having two discrete graphics cards installed on a motherboard. ExtremeTech has put the 780G chipset through a series of gaming and synthetic benchmarks to see just how beneficial this technology is. HotHardware has a similar rundown on the technology. The results indicate that Hybrid Graphics aren't yet ideal for the power-hungry gamer, as driver revisions need to be ironed out at this early stage, but performance looks promising.

stress_life writes "Recent rumors about AMD firing 5% of its workforce proved to be understated. AMD just announced that the company is going to deliver pink slips to 1600-1700 workers, or around 10% of its employees. AMD needs revenue of $2 billion per quarter, but Q1'08 is expected to come in around $1.5 billion. These firings have to be complete by Q3'08, the quarter by which Hector Ruiz promised to be profitable." We most recently discussed AMD's struggles in February.

You can whack them with a shovel. You can shoot them, poison, stab or throttle them. You can threaten their families and you can hound them in the press; you can put them down any way you like, but some artists refuse to stay down. What does this tell us? That artists are the undead? Or, worse, that criticism is in crisis?

Today AMD confirmed the rumors of impending layoffs, announcing that they'd be cutting 10% of their workforce by the end of Q3 2008. AMD also warned investors that revenue for Q1'08 would be around $1.5 billion, which is $100 million lower than what analysts were expecting and 15% lower than Q4'07. AMD said the decrease in revenue is due to lower than expected sales in all segments.

With the Barcelona launch behind them, AMD's next big server project, codenamed "Bulldozer" has been pushed back beyond the first half of 2010. According to a new roadmap obtained by CNET, AMD's immediate plans for servers revolve around their previously announced Shanghai and Istanbul cores. Shanghai will boast three times the L3 cache as today's Barcelona core, with 512KB of L2 cache per core just like Barcelona. In addition, Shanghai will also contain architectural tweaks designed to improve performance. Shanghai will be built on AMD's upcoming 45-nm process and is scheduled to begin shipping at the end of this year. Istanbul will follow Shanghai sometime in the second half of 2009 with 6-cores instead of four.

Various encryption methods can be applied to individual fields rather than entire files. Innovative Routines International Inc. (IRI), makers of the CoSort data manipulation package has announced that CoSort V9 can encrypt and protect files with private personal information down to the field level. Other tools protect sensitive data by encrypting entire files, databases, disks, or laptops—which is often slower, and renders everything else inaccessible. Instead, CoSort can apply different protections to each field as needed: anonymization, encryption, de-identification, filtering, obfuscation, or pseudonymization—rendering data theft futile. Also unique is the fact that CoSort users can employ (and audit) these protections as they manipulate and report from many large files.
