Losing My Religion: Firefox 3

Forgive me, Linux Community, for I have sinned. It has been forever since my last confession and I am prepared for my penance. The truth is that I have never particularly cared for the Firefox browser--not because there is anything wrong with it but just because I already have a favorite browser. No, it isn't the one you think it is. My favorite graphical browser is Konqueror and my favorite text-based browser was--and still is--lynx. Putting my own religious fervor and proselytizing nature aside, my task is to review the new Firefox 3 browser for you.

Is the Palm OS dying? The Washington Post wants to know

The Washington Post is asking the question about the aging Palm OS. Now owned by Japan's Access Software, Palm OS has been in serious decline for a long time. Without even a new paint job in recent years, the Palm OS has seen many users flee to other more advanced devices like the BlackBerry, iPhone, or AT&T Tilt.

Firefox 3.0 Beta 5 faster than Safari 3.1 for Mac OS X in JavaScript test

"Previous benchmark tests that I’d carried out on my Mac mini had shown that Safari 3.1 was the fastest browser for the Mac OS X. Firefox 3.0 Beta 5 changes that," Adrian Kingsley-Hughes blogs for ZDNet.

OS Smackdown: Linux vs. Mac OS X vs. Vista vs. XP

Since the dawn of time -- or, at least, the dawn of personal computers -- the holy wars over desktop operating systems have raged, with each faction proclaiming the unrivaled superiority of its chosen OS and the vile loathsomeness of all others.

Quickipedia for Palm OS Review

Quickipedia ReviewI remember just a few short years ago fumbling with a handful of overpriced, buggy MMC ROM cards from Palm and MDM containing various dictionaries and encyclopedias. These were notable efforts back in the days of OS 4.0 and the early, non-wireless OS 5.x era but they just stored such a pitifully small amount of data that it was an exercise in futility to ever bother with trying to look anything past what might be required for a middle school-level school paper. For an avid pop culture junkie such as myself, there was definitely no way I was going to be able to research 1980s one-hit wonders or brush up on my comic book chronology via a 16mb MultiMedia Card encyclopedia. Even dedicated dictionary apps like BDicty from Beiks hogged valuable system memory and SD expansion card space and were more trouble and cost than they

Firefox 3b5 fastest browser on Mac OS X? Depends on the test

Yesterday Mozilla posted the last public beta of Firefox, freezing the feature set and working its way toward RC status. Over at ZDNet's Hardware 2.0 blog, Adrian Kingsley-Hughes ran the SunSpider JavaScript benchmark on several versions of Safari and Firefox and declared Firefox 3b5 to be the fastest browser on Mac OS X. Unfortunately, his analysis (and possibly data) are dead wrong.

Dear Apple: My iPhone Makes a Good Paper Weight

My iPhone makes a good paper weight. Sure, it does a lot of cool stuff like browse the web like a real computer, and sure it's easy and fun to use, but it's useless to me without Exchange support. Exchange is the cornerstone of my mobile life - without it, I'm out of touch. My emails are not sync'ed (unless I use lousy IMAP), my calendar doesn't look right, and oh...if I add a new contact to my desktop, it doesn't show up on my iPhone several seconds later. Sure, I could manually sync all of the above, but road warriors don't have time to manually sync.

Best Buy Pays $2.1 Billion For Half Of Britain's Carphone Warehouse

U.S. electronics store Best Buy said today that it is paying $2.1 billion for half of Carphone Warehouse in order to enter the European consumer electronics market, Reuters reports. Carphone’s 2,400 existing stores will continue to operate under the Carphone Warehouse and Phone House brands in nine European markets, and starting in 2009 the new company will roll out larger stores under the Best Buy name. Previously, Best Buy teamed up with Carphone Warehouse to create Best Buy Mobile in the U.S. The concept will be added to all Best Buy stores this year. The two companies also have been collaborating to bring Geek Squad technical support to European markets. Best Buy said the consumer electronics category is the fastest-growing in European retail over the past five years and represents about a £89 billion ($175 billion) market.

Can a Virus Retrieve Messages From My Hotmail Account?

Some of my contacts have recently received an email from an unknown sender featuring my full name in the subject and displaying, upon opening the mail, a message I received almost a year ago as an attachment. I deleted the message long ago, but have kept it in my recycle bin. Can it be that someone has gained access to my hotmail? Or does this sound more like a virus/worm? Can a virus or worm retrieve data from my hotmail acct even though I deleted all contacts and e-mails and disabled my hotmail address? Thanks, Morgane

Mac OS, iPhone a "threat" to MSFT dominance

Mac OS X 10.5 Leopard is being labeled a threat to Microsoft's platform dominance, with the operating system's new features such as Spaces, and the Mac's ability to run Windows, being cited as symptoms of the effect. BusinessWeek writer Gary Morgenthaler states that Apple's OS is loosening a "20-year death grip" that Microsoft has had on the industry, especially when combined with VM solutions such as VMware Fusion or Parallels.
