With a wide array of enterprises AIG is still profitable: related news

With a wide array of enterprises, AIG is still profitable

Ben Bernanke, the chairman of the U.S. Federal Reserve, was in Washington on Tuesday for a meeting with congressional leaders on the rescue of American International Group.

Domestic patenting by enterprises on the decline

Domestic patenting by enterprises and associations has been declining steadily since the year 2000. Enterprises filed 1,898 domestic patent applications in 2000 and 1,349 applications in 2007. Enterprises having filed patent applications numbered 563 in 2000 and 467 in 2007. Over the same time period, the number of domestic patents granted to enterprises fell from 879 to 559 and the number of enterprises to which patents were granted from 262 to 246. One reason for the reduction is increased international patenting by enterprises. Applications for patents validated in Finland are also filed with international patenting offices, mainly the European Patent Office. A total of 141 European patents of 71 domestic enterprises were validated in Finland in 2007.

Banks pressed over AIG fund; Prudential seeks AIG assets

Banks are facing criticism over possible losses suffered by thousands of their private banking clients on a supposedly low-risk investment fund run by AIG. The AIG Enhanced Fund suffered a run of redemptions last month in the wake of the Lehman Brothers collapse and AIG’s bailout but investors have been able to liquidate only 50 per cent of their holdings. Seperately, Prudential is talking to potential overseas investors about helping it acquire some of AIG’s Asian assets, appointing Credit Suisse to sound out potential backers.

Movers: AIG, WaMu, Circuit City, Lennar, GE

American International Group (AIG) rose 0.28 to 5.00 after AIG suspends common stock dividend. Separately, CNBC's Charlie Gasparino reported that AIG told employees in a memo that they may lose money in a deferred savings plan, as the funds could go to paying off debts. Earlier, Reuters said AIG shares were higher as CEO Edward Liddy said late Monday on CNBC that he expected AIG to emerge from a federal bailout as a leaner, stronger co. S&P reiterates hold.

.NET Tip: Take a Byte out of Strings

If you work much with Streams or Sockets, you are bound come across the need to convert a string to a byte array or to convert a byte array into a string. There is an easy means to accomplish this, but it is not where I would have expected it to be. The methods to do this are found in the Encoding class. The GetBytes() method is used to get a byte array representation of a string and the GetString() method is used to get a string representation of an array of bytes. Here is an example of how to use the methods:

Nokia Still Sees Handset Growth in China Market

While China's blistering economic growth is cooling, Nokia Corp. said it still expects fast expansion of its business there and in other emerging markets because there are still plenty of people who don't yet have mobile phones.

Blog Buzz: AIG Gets a Bigger Bailout, Barack Obama's Attorney General Pick, the Future of the Republican Party

The Wall Street Journal reports that AIG will get a bigger bailout than originally planned; the $123 billion deal will be replaced with a $150 billion package. Bloggers are none too happy about the news—Tobin Harshaw at the New York Times says the government is helping AIG management to "further loot" taxpayers. Michelle Malkin's reaction is even stronger—"socialism [is] here and now." Another blogger thinks we need to stop "bailing out everyone in sight." Matthew Yglesias thinks a bailout for automakers, a priority for Obama, is more likely now. A conservative blogger explains what went wrong in the American auto industry.

Madison Ave. still loves Yahoo

(alleyinsider.com) -- The strongest indictment of Yahoo management yet might be how much Madison Avenue still loves Yahoo inventory: When your customers love your product, and you still can't sell it, it's time to look in the mirror.

HTC Touch HD Reviews Pour In (Verdict: Best Win-Mo Phone Yet, But Still Win-Mo)

HTC is not releasing the Touch HD in the United States. Which still seems a little crazy to me, because few other phones have received such a favorable and envious reaction online recently. Despite the fact that you probably won't ever want to import one (no US 3G pretty much seals the deal), the Touch HD is still a useful indicator of where HTC, one of the biggest mobile players there is, is going. Now that the phone is available in the UK and Europe, the reviews are starting to hit, and while pretty much everyone continues to be wowed by the hardware, there's that pesky little Windows Mobile thing that keeps coming up.

iPhone Firmware 2.2 Beta 2 Goes Out to Developers: Still No Copy/Paste

So here's the deal. You don't get copy/paste. You don't get image or videos over MMS. And you still can't type your emails or text messages in landscape mode. BUT! If you've been dreaming about Google Street View, or, uh, walking directions... well, you're in luck, because Apple is listening to you and nobody else. One neat little tidbit, though: looks like the SDK is now supporting line-in audio devices, which could lead to some fun later on. Still, not a thrilling update. [Boy Genius Report]

Richard Stallman Looks Back at 25 Years of the GNU Project

"In Stallman's estimation, free software has reached the state where it is starting to be considered a serious alternative. Unfortunately, he says, people 'still consider proprietary software as an alternative, too. In fact, most of them still use that. Even most users of the GNU + Linux system still use proprietary programs, because there are free software developers who don't care about the ethical ideals of free software. Probably they describe themselves as open source supporters, and they let in non-free software. They don't see it as unacceptable. They see it purely as a matter of what is convenient.'

A promising open-source company bites the dust

Ringside Networks was a very cool company - one of the best new open-source companies, as I wrote earlier this year. The company had a dream similar to Ning's - to make social networking-type applications an integral part of a wide array of websites and enterprises.
