The American Civil Liberties Union and the ACLU of Alabama sent a letter last week to the Mobile County School System, the largest school system in Alabama, warning that mandatory sex segregation policies are illegal. Hankins Middle School, one of the system's schools, was segregated by sex for the 2008-2009 school year and currently has no co-educational options. This move was allegedly made without notifying students’ parents and goes so far as to prohibit students from interacting socially with those of another sex, according to the ACLU.

The biggest question India grappled with a day before the start of the second Test was the fitness of Anil Kumble, their captain and an integral part of a two-spin, two-pace attack. The answer, about 21 hours before the captains walked out for the toss, was the same as it was in Kanpur earlier this year. He was troubled by a bad shoulder then, as he is now. "If I can bowl, I will play...So I will assess how I feel in the morning," Kumble had said a day before the Kanpur Test. "It's 24 hours before the match, so we'll just wait and see how it responds," he said on Thursday. He didn't play in Kanpur, and we'll know only at the toss tomorrow if he does here.

Sen. John McCain’s campaign protested removal of videos by YouTube because of takedown notices even though the videos did not infringe on copyrights. Via a letter dated Oct. 13 to YouTube, the campaign said the videos contained less than 10 seconds of video with CBS content. CBS refused comment to TV Week. Comments at news websites often complain about the Digital Millenium Copyright Act that allows copyright holders to submit takedown notices.

ancientribe writes "Hacker RSnake blogs about a newly discovered and deadly denial-of-service attack that could well be the next big threat to the Internet as a whole. It goes after a broadband Internet connection and KOs machines on the other end such that they stay offline even after the attack is over. It spans various systems, too: the pair of Swedish researchers who found it have already contacted firewall, operating system, and Web-enabled device vendors whose products are vulnerable to this attack." Listen to the interview (MP3) — English starts a few minutes in — and you might find yourself convinced that we have a problem. The researchers claim that they have been able to take down every system with a TCP/IP stack that they have attempted; and they know of no fix or workaround.
